Sourtoe Cocktail
This drink dates back to 1972 when a man in Dawson City, in the Yukon, accidentally cut his toe off with a lawnmower. He donated it to a local bar where it was pickled with alcohol. Customers of the Downtown Hotel have the chance to join to Sourtoe Club by having the toe added to their drink. The saying goes, ““You can drink it fast, you can drink it slow, but your lips must touch the toe.” That is truly disgusting.
Pruno
This prison wine is made, illegally, in United States prisons. To make it, you save fruit from your meals and toss it into a plastic bag. This wine is sweetened with sugar, soda or even tomato sauce. From there, you add bread for yeast and be sure to hide it from prison guards. As soon as it’s done fermenting, it’s strained through a shirt or socks and drank, room temperature.
Mares’ Milk Alcohol
Also called kumis, this semi-alcoholic drink has an ancient history dating back to 5th century BC. This drink is traditional in Asian countries like Mongolia, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan. Horses milk has more natural sugar than cows’ milk and these sugars ferment in a way similar to wine-making. These days, these weird drinks are made with cows’ milk, with added sugar.
Cow Pee Soda
Also called Gau Jal, this soda came out about ten years ago in India. The Hindu religion sees cows as sacred and there poop and pee have been used in medicine traditionally for a long time. The soda tastes like a cola but boasts as a health drink. The amount of urine in the drink is unclear and the drink wasn’t too popular. I wonder why.
Tuna Tears Shot
This Korean drink starts with the distilled rice wine called soju, which is also the national beverage. Soju comes in many different flavors but in seafood places called ‘tuna houses’ you can ask for a “tuna tears shot.” The soju is mixed with fluid from the eye of tuna, giving it a jelly-like consistency. It’s poured out of a teapot but sometimes is so thick it needs to be cut with scissors. Does this drink belong on the weird drinks list or what?
Tapeworm
This gross drink also has mayonnaise in it. But instead of plunking it on top it’s drizzled into a mixture of Vodka, Tabasco and black pepper. Can you imagine what this drink looks like in real life?
