- 'Paintback' turns hateful symbols and slogans into something fun and artistic.
It’s sad to think that hate will never disappear. As long as humans roam the Earth, one group of people will hate another for no good reason.
Thankfully, there are people trying to squash hate wherever it pokes its ugly head.
To fight hate in his hometown of Berlin, artist Ibo Omari and his Die kulturellen Erben (The Cultural Heritage) started Paintback. It’s a grassroots campaign to turn hateful symbols and slogans around the city into something less awful, like bunnies and insects.
“Based in Berlin, Germany, the Paintback concept has so far covered up several swastikas around the streets of the city, as far-right groups in Germany begin to show signs of increased activity. Using simple designs and templates, the graffiti artists involved in Paintback hope to inspire others to respond to ugly hate messages in their cities, and make something beautiful out of them.”
