Weird Thanksgiving Traditions To Start This Year

  • You've got a couple days to think about it!

Are these weird Thanksgiving traditions a part of your holiday celebrations? Why not try one out this year?

Eating Competitions

It’s the biggest holiday of food for most people so, why not? From cheese cubes to dinner rolls, you could have an eating content with almost anything. Or better yet, why not do a contest to see who can eat the most complete plates of food? Then you could have all the things you love in the largest amount possible. (Or wait, is this how people eat Thanksgiving dinner year after year, already?)

Olive Fingers

If you didn’t do this as a kid, I’m so sorry. And this is the perfect weird Thanksgiving tradition to start this year! If you don’t already have various kinds of olives as appetizers at Thanksgiving, start there. Then, gather all the kids and all the adults and choose your favorite kind of olives or even mix them! Every finger you want gets an olive and you just pluck each one off with your mouth and eat it.

Wishbone

This is one of the best weird Thanksgiving traditions and everyone who’s making a whole turkey should do it! The idea is to get the wishbone out of the turkey and to let it dry for 30 minutes to an hour or so. It’s really easily cracked then and two people hold onto the bone from either side with their fingers and pull away to see who gets the larger side of the wishbone. The one with the larger side gets to make a wish! Did you do this growing up?

Balance The Spoon

Again, this is a tradition that you absolutely must start if you didn’t grow up with it. For this, you just need some spoons. The idea is to hold the curved part of the spoon over your mouth and breathe hard onto it. Then you tilt your head back just slightly and attempt to balance the spoon on your nose.

Turducken

The thing about the Turducken is the cooking time, all the layers, all the prep! A family I know makes one of these every year but the idea is a chicken, stuffed inside and duck and stuffed into a turkey, then baked. Lots of spices, a stuffing layer or two, and all the butter in all the land, plus the precise cooking time and you will have yourself three meats to go with the rest of your feast. Do you think this is one of the new weird Thanksgiving traditions you’d consider starting?

Pajama Day For Turkey Day

Honestly, what’s a better idea than wearing pajamas for Thanksgiving dinner? This is what we all should’ve been doing in the first place! With all the snacks, pre-dinner appetizers, the meats, casseroles, side dishes, salads, drinks and desserts and maybe even some post-dinner mints, there is nothing more comfortable than pajamas for Thanksgiving. Want to dress cute? Go ahead. (Just pack a bag of sweats for after dinner and thank me later.) Is this one of the new weird Thanksgiving traditions you’re going to start this year?

Turkey Trot

A turkey trot is a walk or run that people sign-up for to participate in on the morning of Thanksgiving. You know, before all the eating and sitting goes down. You don’t have to pay or be in one officially to make it a weird Thanksgiving tradition to walk, run or get in some kind of activity the morning of.

Turkey Bowling

This goes for turkey bowling as well or bowling on Thanksgiving. If there aren’t any bowling alleys open near you, try a bar with some lanes! You could also find a way to move at home including a family walk, playing Twister, building a fire to enjoy and having everyone add wood throughout or even just a good ol’ stretch session on the living or dining room floor.

So what do you think of these weird Thanksgiving traditions? Let me know in the comments!
