- Technically not but, well, it’s both, just not necessarily at the same time.
Today, November 17th, is National Butter Day and National Homemade Bread day so how do you plan to celebrate?
Toast
If there is anything better than toast with butter slathered on it, please enlighten me. Especially with a fresh loaf of bread, there is nothing better than cutting off a piece and throwing it into the toaster. This makes for the fresh-est of toast and butter and is the best and ultimate way to celebrate today.
Bread and Butter
Then again, some people don’t want their fresh bread toasted. No, instead they want to rip off a hunk of fresh, steamy bread and shove it into their mouth. Of course, you should first slather it in butter (and no, margarine is NOT butter.) Toast is the best but if you prefer warm and soft over warm and crunchy, then the steaming bread and butter is it, for you.
Garlic Bread
Whether you toast it, broil it or throw it into the oven, garlic bread is always best with fresh bread, slathered with a garlic butter sauce, and cheesed if you want. Make sure you melt the cheese if you add that or at least get a little bit of a crisp to your garlic bread. Another amazing addition would be some red pepper flakes, think pizza but in the form of garlic bread. A little bit of heat will always bring out the flavors in food and elevate it to the point of perfection. Have you ever tried red pepper flakes on your garlic bread?
Bread Bowl
In most places, it’s starting to get cold out so there is no better time for a homemade bread bowl, baked off and slathered with butter, and something delicious stuffed into it. Typically you can find bread bowls filled with soups, stews and chowders but imagine if you filled it with something else. Try filling it with a sauced spaghetti, chicken alfredo or even your favorite salad with toppings. What? If you love salad and you usually have a breadstick on the side, how different is this, besides getting even more delicious bread.
Homemade Cornbread and Honey Butter
Not quite the bread and butter that’s been listed so far but if you’ve never had honey butter on cornbread, you should absolutely try it and what better day than today.
Grilled Cheese
A grilled cheese made of homemade bread and mayonnaise? That’s how the people make it these days and they swear that it’s superior to all and the absolute best way to make grilled cheese. Butter rules over everything and is the only thing that should be spread onto bread before throwing it in the pan before cheese and the other slice of buttered bread. But you tell me what you prefer.
Grilled Peanut Butter and Jelly
Toasted peanut butter and jelly is also a delicious way to enjoy this sweet and savory sandwich. Again, a twist on the original concept of todays national day but what is better than lots of different combinations anyhow? Speaking of combinations, what if you tried Nutella and peanut butter or even peanut butter and fluff? And toasted it first or put it together first and then threw it into a pan?
Homemade Croutons
Butter burns in the oven, so I would use avocado oil to drizzle over your cut up pieces of bread. From there, add spices from easy to complicated, whether it’s just salt and pepper or those plus garlic powder, onion powder and a shake or two of paprika or chili powder to finish it off. Throw them into the oven to remove the water and make them extra crispy. Straight out of the oven, you can throw these onto your salad hot or give them some time to cool off if you prefer it that way.
So what do you think of these “bread and butter” combinations? Let me know in the comments what you want to try and how you’re going to celebrate this day!
