Today, Manhattan (New York, NY!) is home to millions of people, iconic skyscrapers, and many of New York’s most popular tourist destinations.
But it took a few hundred years for Manhattan to become the impressive city it is today. In fact, back in 1660, Manhattan was referred to as nothing more than a thinly populated, muddy and uncomfortable place.
Taking a look at the many maps of Manhattan created throughout the years can show you how the foundations were laid for what the city is today.
Using data from the archives of the New York Public Library and the Library of Congress, we created this animated map to show how Manhattan has grown over the last 400 years: www.angieslist.com/articles/watch-manhattan-grow-over-400-years.htm
