Whether or not they finish in the top four, this summer promises to be a big one for Ange Postecoglou and Tottenham Hotspur.
The Australian has already made some good signings since arriving from Celtic last summer, bringing in Brennan Johnson, James Maddison, Pedro Porro, and Mickey van de Ven, who have all made an impact in North London.
However, Postecoglou is going to need a string of more recruits this off-season if he wants to take Spurs to the next level and start to challenge for the title, most notably a new striker to fill the void left by Harry Kane.
There’s already plenty of speculation surrounding some of the players Postecoglou could target this summer, but there’s one man already in the Spurs dressing room who will be hoping he has done enough to return to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium permanently this summer.
We are, of course, talking about Timo Werner. Some pundits and fans alike were left scratching their heads when Tottenham swooped in to loan the former Chelsea striker from RB Leipzig in January for the remainder of the season, which includes an option to buy for just £15 million.
However, the German attacker is enjoying life back in the English capital and has provided two goals and three assists in his 11 top-flight games, helping to make Tottenham more favorable in the top 4 odds.
Those aren’t exactly ground-breaking statistics, but a goal contribution almost every other game isn’t a bad return from Werner and it is worth noting that the bar has invariably been lowered in this second stint in the Premier League after a tough spell at Chelsea.
The 27-year-old arrived at Chelsea for £50 million and the Stamford Bridge faithful had high hopes for the German. However, Werner returned to Leipzig for half the price after two seasons and is largely considered to be yet another flop in West London.
Werner contributed toward 44 goals in 89 appearances for the Blues, so there is an argument that he didn’t flop at Chelsea but instead that the expectations were merely too high due to a large price tag, his role in the squad, and the fact he arrived after a 34-goal season for Leipzig.
If Werner can see out this season with similar figures, scoring a goal or providing an assist roughly every other game, then his loan should be considered a successful one, and the decision-makers at Spurs would surely be leaning toward signing him permanently.
Werner is not going to be the player Spurs desperately need to replace Kane, but he could be a useful rotational option for Postecoglou going forward, as Spurs aim to become more favorable in the Premier League outing betting.
Then there is the matter of his price tag. Tottenham can sign him permanently for just £15 million should they choose to do so this summer. In today’s market, it would be silly to turn down signing Werner for that valuation.
In conclusion, Werner’s contribution should already be enough to see Spurs make the move permanent this summer and there is still time to add his tally. £15m could prove to be a bargain as well.
