There are many things in this world that people perceive to be odd, but are actually quite common. This can include everything from clothing to behaviors and even collectibles. Here’s a look at some commonplace things that are still considered odd by some.
- Compression socks
Although diabetic compression socks are extremely helpful for people who need to encourage blood flow and lymph drainage, some people think they’re a bit odd. Perhaps that’s because traditionally, people have worn compression stockings, and they look and feel a little strange. However, today’s compression socks not only look like normal socks, but they come in a variety of fun designs, even for the holidays.
You don’t need to wear stockings to get circulation support. Compression socks can go to the knee, halfway up your calf, a little past your ankle, or be completely invisible in your shoe. You can also get them with an open toe if that’s what you prefer.
- Rugs made from animal hides
It’s one thing to have synthetic rugs that resemble animal hides, but it’s still a bit odd to put actual animal hides on your floor as rugs. Sure, people do it all the time, and it’s associated with wealth. However, many people strongly oppose these rugs on the basis of animal cruelty, and most people would agree that it’s unnecessary to kill an animal just to make a rug.
Both the real and faux animal hide rugs can look good, but it feels creepy when you’re standing on the real thing.
- Taxidermy
While there are many individuals who love taxidermy, and it’s been around for centuries, there are still a lot of people who are repulsed by the idea of stuffing a dead animal’s body to turn it into some kind of decoration. The most common example is when hunters mount entire heads on the wall, like deer, elk, and exotic animals. However, many people stuff entire bodies of smaller animals and place them around the house, on shelves and on the wall.
For anyone who isn’t into taxidermy, this practice is odd and can even be off-putting. It just goes to show that there truly is something for everyone in this world.
- Sneezing
Everyone sneezes sometimes, but if you’ve ever stopped to consider all that’s involved in a sneeze – and how good you feel afterward – it’s pretty odd. Seemingly out of nowhere, you get this tickle in your sinuses and it forces you to take a deep breath and close your eyes, you sneeze, and then you feel amazing. It’s believed that this mechanism occurs when your nasal system is irritated and needs a reboot. Sneezing also causes mirror neurons to fire in some people, similar to yawning.
- Reading
We take reading for granted, but the way it works is pretty odd when you start thinking about it. We look at these little squiggles and our brains instantly know what they mean. We can interpret long strings of squiggles, sometimes in multiple languages, and understand complex thoughts, emotions, and concepts in mere seconds.
- Paparazzi
The paparazzi are an interesting bunch. They basically get paid to stalk celebrities and take photos of them, including photos that would be embarrassing to release, and yet they don’t get in trouble (usually). If anyone else performed their actions, they would probably be met with a restraining order.
- Having pets
As someone pointed out in this article, it’s kind of weird to think about how people just bring animals into their homes against their will, give them food and water, smother them in love, and the animals think it’s great.
Humans tend to adopt all kinds of animals, including dogs, cats, raccoons, possums, foxes, pumas, birds of all kinds, and even tigers. If there’s an animal out there, someone has one as a pet somewhere in the world.
- The spoken word
Just like it’s weird to think about how our brains can understand written words, it’s equally odd to think about the spoken word. We just make all these random sounds and they form complex concepts in our minds. We pick up languages when we’re young, but how does that even happen beyond memorizing words to identify objects? Concepts can get extremely complex, and we somehow manage to understand them in depth.
The world is full of odd, yet common things
If you think too hard, just about anything can seem a bit strange, from a cup of coffee to a fork, and even some common words. However, not everyone will see things this way. Perhaps oddness, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder.
