4 of the Most Unusual Health Conditions

  • The human body is truly an amazing machine...

The human body truly is a wonder of evolution. It’s also very complex as well. That being said, things are not always ideal. When the body malfunctions or when it is attacked by various other organisms, you will end up with conditions that range from being common to downright strange. You will find some of the most of the unusual health conditions listed below.

Proteus Syndrome

This is a very rare disorder and it only affects 120 people. Recently it’s found to have a mutation of one gene and it causes the tissue in the body to grow far more than expected. This can include the muscles, the skin or even blood vessels. This condition cannot be diagnosed at birth and instead it is diagnosed later on. Growths and tumors begin to develop and will eventually lead on to even more problems.

The very famous Elephant Man, known by the name of Joseph Merrick is thought to have a very specific form of this condition. His story shows that behind physical abnormalities, there’s always a strong and courageous soul. Proteus Syndrome can also affect your teeth, as the muscles in the jaw cause them to grow at diverse angles. Dentists like Columbian Square Dental are always working with people who have experienced poor tooth growth, but not many I am sure will have dealt with conditions such as this.

Methemoglobinemia

Royalty was once thought to have blue blood. Medical science has shown that this is not the case, but if you have methemoglobinemia then your blood would be brown. You may find that you have exercise intolerance and that you also fatigue very easily as well. This happens to affect Caucasians the most. If you look at the Fugate Family in Kentucky then they had a very strong lineage of this condition and this caused them to be referred to as the Blue Men of Kentucky.

Werewolf Syndrome

A lot of people have bad hair days from time to time, but if you suffer from hypertrichosis then it’s a whole different story. When you look at the most severe cases, you will soon see that the entire body is covered in hair. The face down to the toes are affected and usually, it is only the palms that are not impacted. This condition was first documented in the 17th century, and it is a congenital condition. It’s caused by genetic mutations and this tends to develop later on in life. Many sideshow performers, including Jo-Jo, who was the Dog-Faced Man to many, suffered from this condition.

Aquagenic Urticaria

For a lot of people, there is nothing as relaxing as having a hot shower or even a dip in the ocean. If you have this condition though then going out in the rain could easily become an agonizing experience. You may find that you break out in hives, itching and even burning sometimes.  This pain and discomfort can easily cause you to struggle and it can also lead to you developing more rashes and painful conditions in the future.
