- To be honest, fireball soccer sounds wild.
Each weird sport is something made up and made real or has been around for a long time. Let me know in the comments what you think of these “sporty” activities?
Quidditch
Harry Potter fans will love this. The game Quidditch is a fictional game for wizards but fans loved it so much they made it a real sport. This game, or sport as it were, is played with a team of seven, each with a broom between their legs. To play this is a mixtures of dodgeball, rugby and tag.
Fireball Soccer
Soccer is soccer, or is it? This soccer game is played with a coconut that’s been soaked in gasoline for almost a week, before being lit on fire for the game. As if this isn’t crazy enough, the match is played barefoot!
Sport-hocking
Sport-hocking started in Germany and involves flipping, spinning and even sliding on a brightly colored plastic bar stool. At the end of each combo or trick, the hocker sits back on the stool, whether hurt or not, because you know, respect.
Chess Boxing
Skills in chess and boxing are needed for this weird sport. Rounds alternate between the two, so your body can rest while your brain works and then you give your body a workout while your brain takes a break.
Underwater Hockey
This doesn’t seem possible, does it? But it’s true, underwater hockey is a thing. Players use paddles to hit a puck into the opponent’s goal, in the water. It’s hard to play, but can you imagine trying to watch it live?
Cheese Rolling
This weird sport has been around for over 200 years, even if it’s not very well known! In England, people gather around the top of Coopers Hill and a judge rolls down a round of cheese. From there, the participants race downward to win the cheese. This cheese rolling takes place during the Spring Bank Holiday.
Gurning Contest
The uglier the face you can make, the better! Gurning contests have been happening since 1297, originating at the Egremont Crab Fair in the UK. Join in on the historic game or you can cheer on your favorite contestants as they put their ugliest faces out, hoping to win!
Ferret Legging
This weird sport involves tying your pants shut, at the ankles, so there is no way for them to escape. From here, you drop two ferrets into the pants and the person who holds out the longest, well, they win! Does this sound like the most terrifying weird sport or, is it just me?
Jugger
This combat sport is inspired by the 80s movie Salute of the Jugger. The movie shows teams armed with swords, chains, and maces. The teams go against each other, trying to knock each other out while one unarmed player tries to score a goal using a dog’s skull as a ball. Can you imagine even playing this? The teams have been toned down from this and all the weapons and dog skull are now foam-covered props.
Bed Racing
Bed racing was first held for members of the Army, Marines or Navy in the North Yorkshire town of Knaresborough in 1965. Now, the competition is open to everyone. Teams are made up of five people that need to make a bed, and each year has a different theme, but the bed has four wheels and can also float. And that’s good, because you need to cross a river, too.
So, what do you think of these sports? Have you ever tried a weird sport from this list?
