More Things That Happened in 2023: Part Two

  • Like the thing about ticks.

Of all the things that happened, it’s crazy that we are using disposable diapers as building material in 2023. Do you know what else happened last year?

Scientists may have found what may be evidence of ancient cannibalism in 2023. A shin bone that’s about 1.45 million years old was found in northern Kenya with nine cut marks on it, confirmed to be for a handmade, stone tool. “The information we have tells us that hominins were likely eating other hominins at least 1.45 million years ago,” according to paleoanthropologist Briana Pobiner. “There are numerous other examples of species from the human evolutionary tree consuming each other for nutrition, but this fossil suggests that our species’ relatives were eating each other to survive further into the past than we recognized.” These cuts aren’t enough to say with absolution that this was a case of cannibalism but researchers do say that’s most likely an explanation.

Disposable diapers were used as a building material. In Japan, researchers discovered the benefits of using disposable diapers, as building materials in the construction of concrete houses. It was found that shredded diapers can replace the large chunk of sand used in concrete construction, without reducing its strength. This is an environmental move if we let it be, reducing the implications on the environment like reducing the waste of non-recyclable diapers and in turn, cutting down on the carbon emissions from concrete construction.

Charles Martinet, the original voice of Mario, took on a special role as of 2023. He is now the official “Mario Ambassador,” with responsibilities such as “traveling around the world sharing the joy of the Mario family and being able to continue meeting with all of you wonderful fans who I absolutely cherish the most.” Did you know this about things that happened in 2023.

The Blythe Star shipwreck from October 1973 was discovered in April 2023. When the ship began to take on water the crew of 10 abandoned ship and spent more than a week adrift in an inflatable raft. Seven of the 10 crew members survived, but the Blythe Star was lost until researchers studied underwater landslides.

The oldest known phallic object may have been found in 2023. The vaguely penis-shaped thing was dug up in Mongolia in 2016 but scientists were able to examine the 42,000 year old object as of 2023. It was noted that there were specific carvings and grooves that convinced some it was a phallus, while others see it was a blob.

The debut of Super Nintendo World happened in Universal Studios Hollywood in February 2023. They have dining at the Toadstool Cafe, riding a reality Mario Kart course, and playing challenges to win coins, like Mario Party. What do you think of this as one of the things that happened last year?

We found out that other animals like to spin and twirl around, just like us humans do. Great apes, chimpanzees, gorillas and orangutans also like to get dizzy but it’s thought that they like to do it for the “high of an altered mental state.”

Earth is tilted 31.5 inches to the east, between 1993 and 2010. The change was seen in 2023 by scientists that believe the tilt was caused by pumping groundwater from the soil. Earth’s rotational pole actually changes a lot,”  says geophysicist of Seoul national University. “Our study shows that among climate-related causes, the redistribution of groundwater actually has the largest impact on the drift of the rotational pole.”

We learned that ticks are extra freaky, even though they cannot jump or fly. A new study in Current Biology in July showed that ticks can travel through the air via static electricity, meaning they can latch onto us without crawling first.  They can clear in under an inch, which for a tick is the equivalent of several flights of stairs for a human.

The original Mario voice has officially retired as of 2023. With The Super Mario Brothers Movie with Chris Pratt as the main title character. The original voice actor for Mario, Charles Martinet, made a cameo but in August, he announced that he would be retiring from the famous red plumber.

Research from 2023 suggests that our brains may perceive silence and sound in the same way. The study was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Using common auditory illusions, researchers tested how people reacted to different stretches of silence. The quiet illusions had the same effect as the noisy ones, meaning that the brain may process a lack of noise as if it were sound.

In 2023, Sesame Street debuted its very first Filipino American Muppet. This Muppet named TJ, is a 4-year-old boy who loves dancing, basketball, and making his little sister laugh. His family moved from California and along with his Grandma, he’s learning Tagalog.

These things that happened last year are pretty interesting. Let me know what you think in the comments!
