Man Fakes Blindness for 50 Years, Collects More Than $1 Million in Benefits

  • You can’t fault him for lack of dedication to his bit.

Blindness is a debilitating disability that deprives you of many aspects of everyday life. Nobody would want to bring this condition on themselves.

Well, except maybe for this elderly Italian man.

To be fair, though, he’s not actually blind. Italian financial authorities recently uncovered a strange, decades-long fraud case involving a man pretending to be blind.

The unnamed gent supposedly lost his eyesight in a work accident in the ‘70s. Since then, he has been collecting various disability benefits, netting more than $1 million.

However, during routine reviews, Italy’s finance watchdogs noticed some unusual discrepancies in the man’s paperwork. They launched a clandestine, months-long observation program, during which they shadowed the man throughout his days.

For a blind guy, he was doing incredibly well. He’d walk through the town unassisted, choose choice vegetables in stores, and even tend to his garden using power tools.

Of course, he could do all that because he wasn’t actually blind at all. The man has now been arrested, and he’s facing fraud charges.

“Give it up, man. I know you can see me.”

Decades-long Con

Our story begins in 1972. In that year, the now 70-year-old man, who hasn’t been named in Italian media, was working at an unspecified company near the industrial town of Arzignano in northern Italy.

Unfortunately, his career was cut short by a workplace accident. The industry permanently damaged the man’s eyes, rendering him completely blind.

Well, he couldn’t really continue working without eyesight. Consequently, the man filed for and started receiving various disability benefits and subsidies from the Italian state.

The twist, though, is that the man was perfectly fine. He hadn’t gone blind, yet he was able to file and receive disability compensation.

Italian news outlets haven’t specified how exactly the man managed to pull off his scam, perhaps out of concerns that the story would inspire imitators. Perhaps he did suffer some minor eye damage, as some sources state he submitted faked medical documents to “prove” his condition.

Whatever yarn he spun for the Italian authorities, they fell for it. The man hadn’t worked a day since 1972, continuing his long con for 53 years.

Over that half-century, he reportedly collected $1.16 million worth of payments in disability payments. That would put his annual income at around $21,800 — nothing to brag about but it was free money.

Additionally, the man may have received other kinds of indirect benefits, such as subsidized housing. In total, it’s likely the total sum of everything he fleeced off the government is even higher.

High-functioning Blind Guy

After more than five decades, you might imagine that nobody would ever discover the deception. However, our septuagenarian’s story began to unravel earlier this year.

The Italian National Institute for Social Security (INPS) and the National Institute for Insurance Against Accidents at Work were performing a routine check when they realized something about the man’s documents just didn’t add up. They cross-referenced their findings against databases kept by the Guardia di Finanza, Italian financial police, and concluded that the man might not be as disabled as he claimed.

To find out the truth, the financial authorities began a secret observation operation. For two months, agents shadowed the man, filming his everyday activities.

Sounds creepy, but the agents’ observations all but confirmed the authorities’ suspicions. The man was performing astonishing tasks on a daily basis for someone who had utterly lost his sight.

He would walk through the busy city completely unaided — he didn’t even have a stick. At stores, he would carefully inspect fruits and vegetables to pick the best ones, before going to the cashier and counting out paper bills to pay for his purchases.

And then there was his gardening hobby. He would cut bushes and plants using pruning shears and heavy power tools, such as motorized hedge trimmers.

Dirty Gains

The monitoring operation led the financial authorities to a single conclusion. This man couldn’t possibly be blind.

And with that, his con came crashing down. He was arrested in October 2025, after the Vicenza prosecutor’s office charged with fraud against the state.

However, due to statute of limitations, the Italian courts are unable to prosecute the man for his entire 50-year fraud scheme. They can only press charges on the last five years, during which he reportedly gained illicit profit in the area of $200,000.

That said, he will likely be ordered to pay back much more than that, considering he hasn’t paid any taxes on his income. Furthermore, he has lost all welfare and social security benefits, likely for good.
