Did you catch my first piece, Fascinating Facts You Never Knew About the Human Body? Not only did it tell you that we are taller in the morning than we are at night, but also that we only need 25% of our liver and it will regrow itself from there.
Here are more fascinating facts about the human body that you need to know.
You Cannot Die From a Broken Heart
Well technically this is true, heartbreak hurts and it can affect us physically. Well a broken heart won’t kill you, it could put you in jeopardy of cardiac distress. Case in point, studies have shown that the risk of a heart attack in a grieving person is twice that of someone not grieving. Stressful events can also affect the heart with “stress-induced cardiomyopathy” or “takotsubo cardiomyopathy.” This condition was first detailed in Japan and describes when the heart is temporarily enlarged, which can sometimes be fatal. This condition can also occur from being scared, ie, scared to death where you won’t die, but it could affect your well being all the same.
White Teeth Are Healthy Teeth
This just isn’t true. First of all, natural teeth are not bright white, no matter what the ADA and toothpaste companies want you to think. The American Dental Association of course tells us that whitening products are safe when properly used and monitored by a dentist. But we all know that these things can and are overused or used incorrectly. Over-bleaching can cause tissue damage and you could even need a root canal because of it. You can also wear away the enamel of your teeth which in turn could turn them translucent or unnatural. Make sure to keep in mind that your teeth can only get so white, no matter what, and that their color is set by your heredity.
If You’re Not Sweating, Your Workout is only Subpar
Sweating doesn’t prove your workout is good, it just proves that you’re hot. Being too hot during a workout could lead to exhaustion and dehydration. People sweat more or less, too, dependent upon many factors. A study done on hot yoga, also known as Bikram, said that the benefit of being in a hot room does make your muscles more flexible, but it does not help you burn extra calories. But, sweating is amazing at removing toxins from the body so the more you sweat, the more toxins you will release.
Snoring is Normal
Well snoring is common, that doesn’t mean it’s safe. Snorers have a great risk of their arteries thickening which can lead to heart disease. You could also have sleep apnea, meaning you stop breathing while you are sleeping, which could be very bad, thus making sleep apnea treatment necessary. Instead of fighting with your spouse and or getting kicked out of the bed (or kicking them out,) make sure to seek medical attention. Snoring could even cause hearing loss for yourself or your partner, so get it taken care of, for the health and sleep, of everyone involved. If you believe you have sleep apnea, visit your sleep apnea clinic for treatment. For instance, if you are in Canada, you can visit Macleod Trail Dental, which is a sleep apnea clinic in Calgary.
There are so many things that we can do to help us fall asleep like counting sheep, eating turkey, or drinking warm milk. But do these things really help? It turns out most of them don’t, and not only will they not help you fall asleep, they may even cause insomnia. Studies show people that think about relaxing images like a fireplace or the beach fall asleep sooner. You can also take a warm bath or shower to help your body ready for bed.
Who knew snoring could be so scary? Our bodies are so interesting and changing more and more all the time. Am I the only one who loves to learn more about it?
