- Or at least read about them because we all want to know what other people are doing!
How do you celebrate Halloween? These ideas could be some of your new favorites ways to spend the day!
Once we know most or all of the stores have brought out their Halloween merch and spirit has opened we go to all the stores at once to get Halloween decor. We call it halloweening
Well for tradition I watch one scary or Halloween movie everyday. On Halloween for the last two years I’ve baked some ginger cakes and ate them while listening to a live reading of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.
Every October, when my son was in school, we would pick the Friday closest to Halloween and I would call in sick to work and call him out
at school. We would pile on the sofa with popcorn and treats and watch scary movies all day. We also had a tradition of watching Psycho together every Mother’s Day. What do you think of these as a way to celebrate Halloween?
This isn’t a tradition we had growing up but my family started doing this a few years ago. We make flaming pumpkins! Rough carve a jack-o-lantern with a large hole for the top. Soak rolls of toilet paper in kerosene overnight (we put them on an aluminum pie plate). Place one roll of toilet paper in each pumpkin and light those babies on fire! They flame for about an hour. We also included these in our Halloween wedding last year.
Last year I went on a Halloween morning hike with my friend. It was really nice. I am going to try to do it this year too.
Make spooky goodie bags for my kid to do a scavenger hunt. We til then sun goes down and turn off all the lights I put on our halloween playlist and hid to jump scare her she looks for the bags with her flashlight. She loves this more then trick or treating.
Make a hearty and rustic soup of some sort and crusty bread. Both are innately wonderful, but they’re doubly so on a perfect day. And if you’re feeling feisty, cooked apples with a little sugar and cinnamon are a great addition.
I haven’t really thought of this as a tradition, but I love listening to the Stuff You Should Know Podcast’s annual Halloween episode! They usually pick one or two scary stories to read. I look forward to it every year. You could do this to celebrate Halloween!
Science Fiction Double Feature: any old horror B-movie and then Rocky Horror Picture Show with costumes and props. Because of my kids, I usually start the double feature around 10 or 10:30 PM.
At some point during an October weekend, my closest family/friend
group gets together and decorates a cabin and does nothing but drink pumpkin cider, drink absinthe, and play Spooky-themed board games. A Touch of Evil is a yearly classic, as well as Mysterium and Betrayal at the House on the Hill.
Every Halloween – without fail since I was a kid – we have had sloppy joes for dinner with pickles and plain Lays potato chips. I now make it for my own family and I love it. We decorate and try to add a little more every year. We listen to Halloween music whenever we can, we make everything Halloween – including our food (pumpkin face carved stuffed peppers, halloween shaped cookies, pumpkin face or bat shaped grilled cheese, etc). You can do whatever you want for Halloween and make it a tradition. Have fun and make it your own! ???
