- Clint Eastwood lived in Oregon and worked at Weyerhaeuser Sawmill in Springfield. He left after seeing how dangerous lumberjacking was.
- The Goonies was filmed in Astoria. There were also a few takes in other coastal towns like Cannon Beach.
- The Oregon trail was formed in 1848 after many discussions between the
United States and Britain. This territory included Washington, Idaho, Oregon and parts of Montana and Wyoming. - The state is credited with the tater tot. Golden Grigg and Nephi wanted to expand their frozen corn business and went into the potato market. In the midst of it all, they created the tater tot! Did you know this about Oregon?
- During December 1861 to January 1862, the “Great Flood” brought the largest flood to hit the state. The “Great Flood” killed 4,000 people across three states including Oregon, California and Nevada.
- Marashino cherries are a product of Professor Ernest Wiegand of Oregon State University. The cherries became a byproduct of his way to preserve cherries so they don’t spoil.
- In October 1933, the coldest temperature recorded in Seneca was -54
degrees Fahrenheit. Wow, this is a crazy cold fact about Oregon. - Gold was found in Rouge River, on July 25, 1980. A boom in population happened at the time along with crime, for a time.
- “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” took place where the Museum of Mental Health now stands. The film was based in Salem.
- The first corndog was created on Highway 101 along the coast to Rockaway Beach. The stand is still there to this day and you can’t miss it, as the Pronto Pup stand is topped with a giant corndog.
- Portland is referred to as “Beervana” in craft beer circles and you’ll find it in Portland. It being 70-plus breweries and more pubs where the beer is also sold.
- At first, Oregon City was the state’s capital. However, in the early 1850s, lawmakers fought for Corvallis to be capital. Salem was the ultimate winner though and is still the state capital today.
- Portland has more breweries than any other city in the world including more than 70 breweries within its city limits.
- Pear is the state fruit. You can find all types of pear products including pear cider and pear brandy. Pears are delicious. Did you know this fun fact about Oregon?
- Tribes like the Chinook, Klamath, Nez Perce, and Coquille are all from Oregon.
- Portland is also specifically known for its local and environmentally-friendly
supplied breweries. - “Portlandia” has characters based on real-life Portland residents and was filmed solely in Portland.
- Don’t walk backwards and eat a donut in Marion, Oregon! You could get fined!
- The city name of Portland could have been Boston. The story says that the name was decided by a coin toss, if the coin had went the other way, there would be two famous Bostons in the United States.
- The shortest river in maybe the whole world flows through Lincoln City. It’s only 121 feet long.
- In a wooded area in Hillsboro, there’s a retired Boeing 757 that was put there in 1999. It was a $100,000.00 project for a man who converted the plane into a home. Each year the man opens him home for public tours and even concerts on the wing of the plane. What an awesome fun fact about Oregon!
- Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the United States and is one of the biggest tourist attractions in the state. It was formed over 6,500 years ago after the volcano became inactive and at its deepest, the lake is 1,949 feet down.
- You will see mostly Douglas trees throughout the state. It’s the official state
tree of Oregon. - Oregon has 61 volcanoes and five of them are still active.
- There are 53 covered bridges in the state but over 7,000 bridges total. The first bridge in Oregon City was in 1851.
- If you practice “occult arts,” you’re going to want to stay away from Yamhill. That is, if you’re caught in the practice, you could be arrested.
- This state has more ghost states than any other state in the Union. There are more than 200 ghost towns or nearly abandoned towns that exist in Oregon.
- In Pendleton, the city hit a record high temperature of 119 degrees Fahrenheit.
