Blockbuster Airbnb Opens (Shortly) For a Very 90s Experience

  • Yes, Blockbuster. You remember, the video store of your childhood hopes and dreams.

Come one, come all… back to Blockbuster? Yup, the last ever Blockbuster store is offering a sleepover, and a very nostalgic peek into the past.

Airbnb wants to get people into the Blockbuster, and they have it listed as a studio with one bedroom and a half bath. The kicker? For a three one-night stays, the cost is only $4. or about the price as a Blockbuster video rental.

That is. if you’re a resident of Deschutes County.

“Whether you want to stay up until sunrise or pass out on the couch, we’ve created the perfect space complete with a pull-out couch, bean bags and pillows for you to cozy up with ‘new releases’ from the ‘90s. Crack open a two-liter bottle of Pepsi before locking into a video game, charting your future in a game of MASH, or watching movie after movie.”

This 90s themed dream will take place on September 18th, 19th, and 20th, and includes unlimited video games, movies, and snacks. Nostalgic throwbacks like Raisinetters, Nerds, and retro bags of Doritos will be included.

Stays will begin to be booked today, August 17th, at 1 p.m., along with enhanced cleanings before parties, and of course including hand sanitizer and face masks, because COVID. Groups of four can sign up together.

Sandi Harding, store manager, says that the listing of the property on Airbnb is her way of giving back to the community.

“I’ve seen the highs and lows of this business, but nothing can replace going to the store with loved ones to browse the shelves and find a movie that suits whatever mood you’re in,” says Harding, a part of the store since it opened in 2004. “The COVID-19 pandemic has been a test of our community unlike any other, so we decided to list this stay to keep this tradition alive during these uncertain times.”

Sounds like fun to us. And even if you can’t go for an unlimited overnighter, the store does provide real human movie recommendations via phone, if you’re in the market.
