Horny Kookaburras Leave 1,000 Australians Without Power

  • Yeah, but what a way to go!

Ever wonder how much damage two love-crazy kookaburra birds could do? Well, Australia can tell you, and it’s not TOO much. You know, just enough to knock the electricity of more than 1,000 homes…

It Happened In Perth, Australia

A pair of “horny birds,” ( as Vice.com calls them) are believed to be the cause of the widespread power outage in Australia. They decided to mate on top of a power line in Carine, Perth, Australia. They got a little too close to the electric line, and they “started with a spark and finished with a bang.” A witness told the whole story to Watoday.com.au.

Witnesses Story

An unnamed man said that he was out walking his dog near the corner of Albion Place and Fair Lane Drive. He saw two birds near the power line. The birds get too close to the electrical equipment. They triggered what the witness called “two big flashes.”

Then came a series of loud bangs, and moments later, over 1,000 homes lost power. The witness was out walking his dog just after 4 pm. The power came back in some places by 5:30 pm.

The Power Spokesperson’s Message

Western Power spokesman Paul Entwistle spoke to WAToday.com.au. “The thing that’s probably holding it up is the pole they decided to make their love nest (on), was pretty close to a substation. So, just because of protocols, we have to have a bit of a look around the substation to make sure there was no flash-over that’s gone back into the substation. But I think generally from these sorts of incidents, the network comes out trumps. But the birds seldom do.” Sadly, the birds did not survive, but there were no other that deaths occurred. Paul said: “It seems to be a case of a couple of lovebirds who have made the wrong connection, unfortunately.”
