  • And now you know...

Are you an NFL fan? The National Football League has been around for centuries, and fans of different races and ages have had the opportunity to witness different historical moments in NFL history.

The NFL is one of the famous franchises in sports everywhere. Sometimes, fans won’t even bother to search the history of the NFL, how everything started, and the interesting facts they should know. Well, that changes today because this page discusses the exciting facts in the NFL.

Super Bowl

Have you watched any Super Bowls lately? It’s the biggest event of the AFL-NFL championship, where different teams compete against each other, and celebrities visit or even perform in the middle of the arena.

Did you know the Super Bowl wasn’t the name when it was first inaugurated? It only happened when the AFL team, the Jets, beat the NFL team, the Colts, in the third Super Bowl championship game between the two leagues.

This game against the Jets and the Colts was commonly coined as the “Namath’s Guarantee” when the QB of the Jets, Joe Namath, guaranteed that his team would beat the Colts. The NFL bets during the 1969 Super Bowl game were placed on the Jets since they were the strong favorites to win.

First Black Professional Football Player

We all know about the racist color barrier back then. It was memorable when the first black athlete, Jackie Robinson, joined the MLB in 1945. However, the first sports player to become a black professional football player was Charles Follis in 1904.

The Birth of the NFL

Did you know that the National Football League was born out of a car dealership? Back in 1920, the representatives of different American football franchises met and discussed the future of professional football in Canton, Ohio, at Ralph Hay’s Hupmobile auto showroom. They discussed how they would form the National Football League (NFL).

At its inception, it was first called the American Professional Football Association (APFA) and then changed the name to the National Football League (NFL) after two years.

Pro Football Hall of Fame

After the birth of the American Professional Football Association (APFA), a team called Canton Bulldogs won 25 straight games without losing any games in 1921-1923, they won 22 games and three ties. They also won two NFL championships in 1922 and 1923!

Did you know that Jim Thorpe, an NFL legend, played for the Canton Bulldogs during these years? Even in 2023, their winning streak is the longest win in NFL history. Not one team has ever beaten the Canton Bulldogs in this feat. Thanks to the Canton Bulldogs’ early success, the National Football League decided to place the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.

The Only NFL Team Owned by Fans

Did you know that only one NFL team is publicly owned by fans? It’s true! The Green Bay Packers hold a unique distinction in contrast to its other teams. This ownership began in 1923, and according to their bylaws, the profits they receive are to be reinvested in the team or donated to charity.

As you can see, the Green Bay Packers hold great value to their community. The Green Bay Packers is also one of the top-performing teams in the NFL, so it’s no wonder it gathered attention from all parts of the world. Even Harry Styles is a fan.

Most Super Bowl Losses

In the 1990s, the Buffalo Bills played in the Super Bowl for numerous years and lost in the four straight years they played. Other than this, another team isn’t discussed as much as the popular Bills, which is the Vikings. The Minnesota Vikings lost four Super Bowls in eight years. It’s just a more prolonged period where they lost. Both of these teams have never won a Super Bowl.

The NFL’s Longest Game

On average, the actual playing time consists of only 60 minutes, divided into four 15-minute quarters. This 15-minute can be used if extra time is required. Limits are in place because of how physically demanding each game can be, and if it proceeds to overtime, it can be even more endurance testing for the players.

1971 was the birth of the longest NFL game in history, about 82 minutes and 40 seconds of play, to be exact. It includes two overtime periods where the Miami Dolphins won against the Kansas City Chiefs. As fans, you can only imagine how intense the training was for the Dolphins and Chiefs back then, and we hope they use the same training methods today so we can rest assured that their endurance is at the same level as their seniors.
