Who doesn’t love animals? Most of the creatures we see, we would describe as “adorable,” beautiful,” or “majestic.” What about the ones we don’t see very often? The ones that lurk in the dark or in remote places few people visit?
There are some hideous creatures out there that you won’t believe exist. Here, we introduce you to some of them. Hopefully, you won’t ever cross paths with them in person.
This small mammal is mostly found in the rainforests of Madagascar. It looks fragile with its thin hair and scrawny appearance. But those big ears and yellow eyes could haunt anyone’s dreams.
This hideous creature looks more like an alien than an animal.
This hairless, burrowing rodent is also called the “sand puppy” which makes it sound much cuter than it is. The naked mole rat has some “unusual” physical features like being pink, white or gray, wrinkly, and nearly hairless.
These creatures also have tiny eyes making them nearly blind. They also have no external ears. Their faces look almost blank except for the giant front teeth they use to burrow underground and bore into their food.
Monkfish, also called “poor man’s lobster,” may taste good but you don’t want to come across this ugly thing in the water. Monkfish have heads as wide as their bodies are long and an enormous mouthful of sharp fangs.
Monkfish can eat prey that is about half their size and have been known to capture waterfowl on the surface of the water-even though they are bottom-dwellers.
This frog is an endangered species and is very hard to find. The Titicaca scrotum frog lives in the Lake Titicaca region of Peru and Bolivia and is the world’s largest fully aquatic frog.
It is the numerous folds and baggy nature of its skin that give this creature it’s unfortunate name.
Commonly known as “walking fish” and “water monsters,” this hideous thing is in danger of becoming extinct. These creatures actually choose for themselves whether to live in water or on land and make a metamorphosis accordingly.
Axolotl’s have been used to cure ailments and to study cancer. Environmental factors are endangering these creatures. However, attempts are underway in Mexico to protect the species and revitalize its population.
The Axolotl has become a political and cultural symbol in Mexico City, and according to some people, has the power to help the area make positive changes.
This scary-looking, orange-pink-yellow bald-headed bird is the largest flying land bird in North America that was once extinct in the wild. It’s wingspan can be measure up to 10 feet across and they can weigh over 20 lbs.
Condors can fly thousands of feet in the air and often do so at over 50mph. They can soar for hours and do so to find carcasses on which to feed. These carnivores eat dead animals like deer and cattle. Although these hideous creatures look like they could kill you, they only eat things that are already dead.
Hyenas looks like a zombie dog and have rightfully earned their reputations as demonic, deranged scavengers. Their howling screams and maniacal laughter can be heard up to three miles away.
They also, however, are some of the most skilled hunters and survivors of their environment. Almost 70 percent of their diet is the result of direct kills. They have jaws that are incredibly strong in relation to their size and can also digest almost all parts of an animal.
This hideous, weird-looking creature is the fastest among mammals when it comes to devouring their prey. The hairless nose organ is actually 22 fleshy tentacles used to do things like sense its surroundings, keep soil at bay while burrowing, and consuming prey. The tentacles move so fast that they can touch more than 20 objects per second. They are extraordinarily sensitive.
This is the largest species of freshwater turtle, resembling more dinosaur than turtle or alligator. They can have a bite force of 1000 lbs.
The good news is that these terrifying-looking turtles barely move. They can go an hour without breathing and so spend most of their time under water. They rarely come on land. If you do see one, you probably don’t need to run for your life. But, don’t pick it up or stick your hand in its mouth.
This is one creature that is either hideous or so hideous that it’s actually cute. Aardvarks are born hairless, wrinkled (sounds like humans!) with droopy ears. Over time, they do grow hair, their wrinkles smooth out (again like humans!) and their ears perk up.
These sharks swim in the deep dark ocean and are rarely seen in the wild. They can be up to seven feet in length. Frilled sharks swim in an oddly eel-like fashion with its fins being located toward the rear. They can consume large prey in one gulp thanks to their rows of pointed teeth.
The Frilled shark gets its name from its gills which appear like frills on the sides of its body.
This is without a doubt one of the most hideous creatures on land or sea. The deep sea anglerfish is known for its “unique” look and ability to attract prey with a glowing lure that dangles over its head.
The good thing for humans? They live so deep in the ocean that we rarely see them.
This colorful and majestic (and hideous) fish will amaze you instantly by its ability to hide and camouflage. It hides in rocks, sand, and caves on the ocean floor, lunging at its prey.
This rare shrew can grow about a foot long and has a weirdly flexible snout. Their saliva is venomous and enters its prey when they bite.
They seem to have traits that make them similar to a variety of animals- they smell like goat, sound like birds, and sleep like bats during the daytime.
This flat, squishy blobfish has long been considered the world’s ugliest creature. It has been featured everywhere from magazine covers, to newspapers, and internet memes. It is popular and beloved for its ugliness.
Some sources suggest that in the blobfish’s natural habitat, which is thousands of feet under water, it looks like an ordinary fish and that the pressure of being brought up to the surface causes the fish to lose its shape.
This small fanged bat is often called “the reaper” or “destroyer.” This little thing has fangs that can destroy anything they can puncture.
This doesn’t even look like an animal. Is it a chew toy? A bug? A potato?
It is a horseshoe bat. What more can be said about this hideous face?
Oh boy. Another hideous-looking creature. This female hairless baboon was spotted in Zimbabwe by some travelers. It is not known why the baboon is bald- it could be alopecia or some other reason.
Sadly, this baboon appears to have been shunned by her community.
Cross-breeding dogs is not always a good idea. The Chinese-crested dog is one of them. There are two varieties in this breed; one has hair and the other is hairless.
Chinese crested dogs have won many world ugliest dog contests. Understandably.
This grumpy sphinx cat is indeed hideous. It looks like a big naked old rat with just the head of an angry man. This is one of those animals that is so hideous that some people think it’s cute.
A warthog is a long-faced pig with a horn. Folklore tells us that warthogs were once handsome creatures. One warthog got in a fight because of being boastful. He was stung with Porcupine quills that left his handsome face swollen and deformed. Thus, the hideous warthog we know (and love?) today.
Ew. Is it a turtle? Is it a snake?
Unlike other turtles with short necks, this one has a neck that makes it look like a snake is coming out of the turtle’s shell. While it can hide and retract its neck, it can also grab its prey by lunging it forward and creating a vacuum by opening its mouth.
This horrifying viperfish is one creature that will haunt you in your nightmares. With its sharp teeth, big mouth, and terrifying eyes, be glad this fish lives in the depths of the sea far from you.
