18. Reality Show “Shark Men” Results in Death of Body Boarder
National Geographic show “Shark Men” was being filmed off the coast of South Africa in 2012. Reports say that the show producers were chumming the waters- dumping fish parts into the water to attract sharks to film for the show.
Just a few days later, David Lilienfeld was attacked and killed by an enormous shark. Lilienfeld was a local champion body boarder, only 20 years old. Residents blamed the show for bringing dangerous sharks into an area where no sharks had been spotted since 1999. The show’s chumming permit was revoked and the show was cancelled.
