16. Paul De Gelder, Australian Navy Diver Loses Limbs
During a Navy exercise, De Gelder found himself face to face with a large grey shark. The shark had clamped down on his leg and his hand at the same time. After trying unsuccessfully to get the giant off him, De Gelder says he gave up. Remarkably the shark released him and his buoyant wetsuit brought him to the surface.
De Gelder knew his hand was gone. He couldn’t feel one of his legs. He somehow swam through a pool of his own blood to safety on the boat.
He lost his hand and after a week of contemplation, decided to amputate the leg.
