- Sixteen thoughts from others and how they really feel about Americans obsession with American football
Americans are obsessed with American football but do you know what other countries think? Here are some opinions.
- Football becomes far more interesting once you learn the various strategies and tactics used and understand the game beyond just the basics. I grew up playing hockey and lacrosse which are much more fast paced “flow” based games that rely on improvisation so I had similar feelings about watching it. It took me a while to realize what made football really fun to watch. Football is literally a turn based strategy game. Once you understand how the coordinators are supposed to put together drives to complement eachother and maximize their teams strengths, it becomes much more compelling to watch. Because the breaks give you time to analyze each play and see how the game is developing and to anticipate how your team will react/counter your opponent. That’s what makes football so different than other sports.
- I am Canadian and really like American Football.
- My husband is Canadian and I tried to get him into football when we first started going out. His biggest complaints were that it was overly complicated, and the constant stopping and starting made it boring.
- Well I’m British and it’s one of my favorite sports. Been a 49ers fan since
2012. Love American sports in general. Went to my first game at the Levi’s last year. Hoping number 6 comes soon. It’s a painfully brutal sport. - The guy from Serbia is here. I think it’s a great sport, you will not find many sports with so many comebacks and thrilling endings. You gotta understand sport at first, then you can judge. The only thing that I don’t like about American football is a lot of commercials (like the majority of people I guess) everything else is great if you actually like sports.
- American football was fun to play, but receiving a concussion was not. Switching to long distance running was better for my health in the long run.
- Love it….moved to NYC in the early noughties for a couple of years and fell in love with the game and the Pats. Love the strategy and insane athleticism. In recent times I’ve veered towards the college game but it’s so odd to have a bunch of old dudes deciding who‘s best…..some of the terms still flummox me, like nickel back etc. and I can see why the sport isn’t particularly popular beyond your shores due to the complexity….it ain’t simple like real football 😉
- I’m canadian. I don’t really like sports in general, but I kind of like football. It feels very tactical. Like making moves to try to break through the opponents lines. Idk I like that aspect about it
- At the time of its inception in the 19th century, it was adapted from rugby football and passes were not part of the game. Forward passes weren’t made legal within the rules of gridiron football until 1906, by which point the name was well established and the sport’s identity as a carrying game began to change.
- As a medical professional, the sport terrifies me. So many promising young
people with brain damage. - The amount of commercials are awful, and seem to get worse each year.
- What Other Countries Think About American Football
- Football is a group of games named for being played on your feet. Soccer, Association Football, has just as much right to the name as American Football but it wasn’t as popular in the US so the generic football got used for American Football, while Association football got Soccer.

- Probably the same that people outside Australia think about aussie rules football or people outside Ireland think about Gaelic football. If the name of your sport has a country in it, no one outside that country cares about it.
- Mainly wonder why the fuck it’s called football.
