  • Did you know some people are allergic to water?

These weird allergies are very real and very strange. Did you know some people are allergic to water?

Band-Aids

Yes bandaids. They help stop bleeding, are used to cover open cuts and even to help soothe the skin between the bandaid by adding some kind of ointment. But even as helpful as they are, some people are allergic to bandaids and it may even extend beyond that. The adhesive on the strips of the bandaids (not the cotton square) can cause people to itch and break out into a rash. The area of the skin can become hot and uncomfortable. Did you think bandaids were one of the weird allergies on this list?

Water

With the body being composed of mostly water, it’s hard to imagine that some people have weird allergies surrounding the liquid. People with a water allergy can have aquagenic urticaria, meaning their skin will get hives when they come into contact with water. These hives are itchy and painful. There are some topical and oral remedies to help with the symptoms of this allergy, but there is no known cure when it comes to being allergic to water.

Exercise Post-Meal

You have heard people say they are “allergic” to exercise, but for the vast majority, what they mean is they don’t like to exercise. But for some people, they are legitimately allergic to exercise. The increased heart rate and blood flow can cause an allergic reaction to certain foods eaten before a workout, called food-dependant exercise-induced anaphylaxis.People who suffer from this are urged not to eat before exercise, also known as a fasted workout. They should also consider working out with a partner and carrying an epinephrine pen, in case of an attack. People with these weird allergies can see an allergist for diagnosis and treatment.

Being Touched

There are the people whose love language is physical touch and the people who don’t want to be touched at all. But then there are also people with weird allergies and they are touched, they can actually have an allergic reaction to it. For some, if their skin is touched, it triggers a histamine release, causing hives and itching. This condition is known as dermatographism and it’s not uncommon! Antihistamines can help with ths symptoms, but there is no cure for this allergy.

Sunlight

Everyone needs sun. Or do they? There are some people that have an allergic reaction in the sun called solar urticaria. This allergy is also from a release of histamine and so can be helped with antihistamines, wearing loose clothing and covering your head and some of your face with a hat. Do you know anyone with these weird allergies?

Sweat

And last but not least for this list, some people are allergic to their own sweat. Sufferers may experience an itchy, bumpy rash anytime they engage in activities that raise their body temperature, from too hot of a shower to being outside on a hot and sunny day. This condition is known as cholinergic urticaria. People with these weird allergies are urged to minimize activities that make them sweat. There are treatments available to help with the symptoms.
