After that, Rochelle was thinking back on the day, her mind racing with thoughts. What was Jared? Who was he? She knew that he could be a danger
to children and it was so alarming to her.
He acted friendly, caring, compassionate, and he was well liked and respected. But it was all a lie.
Jared went on Oprah and Pam Blakeman was watching with her husband. As soon as she saw Jared’s story, she was hooked.
That day, she picked up her first Subway sandwich and the rest was history. Six months later, Pam was 55 pounds down and called Jared her hero and her inspiration. She too became somewhat of a local star.
A few weeks later, Subway called her and asked her to be in a commercial with Jared the Subway guy. There were five of them in total and they were known as the “Friends of Jared.” He told the five that their lives were going to change after this commercial, and boy, did they.
For a year, Pam said people were honking and waving. She said she couldn’t imagine that Jared had been through with that kind of attention for 15 years. She said he was very humble and he just wanted to help other children lose weight.
She said she never saw the dark side of him, just the good side of him.
Rochelle knew she needed evidence to prove Jared was up to no good and that he was a danger. She started her own research to see if he was ever
arrested or charged with anything, contacted older interviewers or people he know. She dug into everything she could and didn’t find anything.
So her plan was to get Jared on tape in his own words with his own voice expressing his desires, his confessions and his plans for children. She admitted it wasn’t the most thought out plan but once she had that she was going to hand it over to the authorities.
She said that’s when things really got crazy.
A second interview was arranged with Jared the Subway guy and Rochelle. She said in a side conversation he gave her his cell phone number. This was her way of recording conversations with him.
They had a few short calls in the beginning. She said he was cautious with what he would tell her initially, so she tried to plant seeds and not ask too much or push.
He would bring up children throughout the phone calls but at first it was just about the program. He wasn’t sexual in nature yet and she knew she didn’t have enough.
She told Jared she’d meet him and he made the arrangements for her to come visit him when he was in West Palm Beach, Florida. She admits she was naive to a point about this kind of investigation or what kind of harm could come to her.
She brought her dictaphone with her in her purse. Once she got the the hotel, she turned it on. She said she was very nervous but tried to act as calm as possible.
Once she went into his room, she said she sat on the bed because the only chair in the room had his
luggage bag on it. He sat next to her and quickly became very hands on. She calmly pulled away from Jared the Subway guy.
He leaned over and said how hot it would be if she put her hair into pigtails and asked her if she would do it.
After that, she had no doubt that he was a pedophile. He went into the bathroom and closed the door so she left and walked as quickly as she could to her vehicle.
He suddenly called to ask where she went and she explained it off saying she had to go be with her kids. She was crying and shaking the whole way home.
