The month of March has two birth flowers, jonquils and daffodils. Interestingly, all jonquils are daffodils but not all daffodils are jonquils. Jonquils represent love and affection and daffodils represent hope and rebirth. The story says that daffodils are thought to have been named after Narcissus as he fell in love with his own reflection in the water. He was so in love with himself he fell into the pool and drowned, with a single daffodil that blooms in his place of death. Jonquil is named after a kind of rush and refers to the rush-like leaves of the bulb. Do you think this is one of the fun facts about March?
Two Birthstones, Too
The month of March has two flowers and two birthstones, aquamarine and bloodstone. Aquamarine is a luck charm for Roman sailors, believing it would protect them on the high seas. Others think of it a a stone that could help cool tempers, prevent poisoning and increase the chance of epiphanies. The bloodstone on the other hand is associated with bravery and vitality, going back to the Middle Ages and Christian legends.

During this month, the number of vasectomies surges a staggering 50% during the first week of March Madness. They say recovery includes at least a day with ice, to keep the swelling down. Stephen Jones, MD and urologist says that , “if they’re going to spend a whole day doing nothing, it’s not hard to figure out that they’d want to do it on a day they’d like to be sitting in front of the television.” So the week of March Madness is perfect for some downtime on the couch. Named After Mars
The month of March was named after Martius, also known as Mars, the Roman god of war. As the winter snow and cold begins to melt away, leaving the ground fertile for harvest within the Northern hemisphere, March is the perfect month to resume farming and warriors to continue warring. Also, all major U.S.-NATO-led military operations since the invasion of Vietnam have begun in the month of March. Did you know that?

If you were born before 150 BC, then your birthday was in the first month of the year. The oldest Roman calendars were 10 months long, starting in March and ending in December. Crazy enough, you can still see some of these changes in our calendar today. As the last month, December was named for the number 10, decem, in Latin, and September was named for the seventh, septem. January and February are the exceptions and in the old days they were just nameless months called “winter.” Apparently winter has been a hated on season since the very beginning. This has got to be one of the most shocking March fun facts.
