- The video from 2018 recently went viral for a second time on YouTube.
- In the video,"Still the dumbest tourist ever?" a man pets a male lion from inside a Jeep and somehow doesn't die.
The Masaai Sightings channel on YouTube just resurrected a video from 2018 that went viral for a second time. It’s no wonder, given the title is “Still the dumbest tourist ever?”
In the video, tourists film themselves in a Jeep in Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park. A massive male lion looks for shade right outside the Jeep window. One tourist, lacking a shred of common sense or self-preservation, reaches through the window and pets the lion’s back.
The Sun spoke with a South African safari ranger back in 2018, who detailed what could have happened, “it could have torn the arm off the person touching it. It would have the power to pull that tourist straight out of that window and kill them instantly in front of their friends.”
The One Things the Internet Agrees About
The comment section on YouTube is a united chorus of derision for the man and his action. Honestly, it’s a little unsettling to see the internet come together in wholehearted agreement. Commenter Gold Wolf wrote, “I wouldn’t feel any sympathy for him had the lion gotten ahold of him. That’s nature man natural selection at work!!!!!” and received over 100 upvotes.
I can understand how people, not even the ‘dumbest ever’ but just run-of-the-mill dumb, forget wild animals don’t forgive stupidity. After all, the Tiger King made his fortune from telling people it was okay to pet tigers. You can even blame Disney if you want. They turned all kinds of animals into curmudgeonly but likable best friends for princesses (I’m looking at you, Raja).
Also back in 2018, at a Dutch safari park, a family left their vehicle to get their young child closer to some cheetahs. Luckily, in defending their territory the big cats didn’t hurt anyone. They just chased the family back to their car. Not so lucky was a woman in China. She got out of her car at the Badaling Wildlife Park to see some tigers up close. A tiger badly mauled the woman, while a second cat killed her mother who was coming to help.
Naas Smit, the South African safari ranger, summed it up well, “It was an incredibly stupid thing to do.” And it still is, even years later.
