The Japanese wanted to declare war prior to the attack but apparently the message never got to the president. Also, Pearl Harbor was attacked Sunday morning because the Japanese thought that the US soldiers would be less alert that time of the day.

Hanukkah

Also known as Chanukah and Chanukka, Hanukkah lasts eight days. Many families like to celebrate by exchanging gifts on the eighth day. It starts each year on the 25th day of the Hebrew month Kislev which can be a date anytime from late November to late December.

Birth Flowers

People born in December have two different birth flowers, how lucky! Holly is one of them, an obvious flower of the season. The second is a paperwhite narcissus, cousin to the daffodil, that flowers in the winter. This pure-looking flower is said to symbolize sweetness.

Disney in December

Walt Disney was born December 5th 1901. He released his fist cartoon, featuring non-other than Mickey Mouse, called Steamboat Willie at the age of 27. By 54, Disney had grown the empire by way of Disneyland in Anaheim, California. What a cool December Fun Fact.

The Month of Giving

Did you know that December is celebrated as the month of giving? Giving gifts started around the 15th century as Christmas was seen as a holiday that focused on friends and family. Throughout the years, the month of Christmas has become a universal time of giving and reminds us of the history of Christmas.

Cotton Candy?

Yes, it’s true. Right smack dab in early December, on the 7th, we celebrate cotton candy day. You think it would be in mid July, August, or even in a month like September that’s full of festivals but nope. Did you know that dentists were the ones that invented cotton candy in the first place? It’s true and more so, it was even called fairy floss back in the day. This has got to be the one of the oddest December fun facts of the list.

 National Ice Cream Day

Again, why is this not a nationally celebrated dessert in the middle of the summer. I mean, when else would we expect it to be? National Ice Cream Day is celebrated on December 13th, so pick your favorite and go for it. For extra fun and a wintery touch to your ice cream dessert, make a warm cup of cocoa and then add a scoop of vanilla. This is as delicious as it sounds.

Lemon Cupcake Day

Lemon cupcakes sound amazing, don’t they? Cupcakes date back to 1796 as a recipe notation in the book “American Cookery,” Amelia Summons notes “a light cake to bake in small cups” within her notes. Top with a new age frosting like lavender vanilla or keep it lemon-y and tart with a fresh lemon vanilla frosting.
