- He might be blind and drunk, but he sure knows how to drive.
Too many people on the road drive so recklessly that they make you question whether they should be behind the wheel. If you’ve ever driven anywhere, you’ve certainly wondered if the driver ahead of you is blind or drunk or something.
In this strange case, you would’ve been correct on both counts – the driver was blind AND drunk.
Anthony Hall recently received a suspended sentence after going on a drunken late-night drive. That’s nothing unusual in itself (people sadly drive drunk all the time), but what pushes his actions into the bizarre territory is that he’s almost completely blind.
The 50-year-old Englishman had fallen on hard times and, following multiple bottles of wine, he decided he needed to get away from it all. So, he climbed into his partner’s car and drove off, despite having neither a license nor eyesight.
Miraculously, Hall didn’t hit anyone along his drunken way (although he did scrape his car on guardrails and barriers). He reportedly even stopped for gas and received help from station attendants who never realized Hall absolutely should not be behind the wheel.
Eventually, the police stopped the blind driver and took him into custody. Now, he has received an 18-month suspended sentence on account of his hardships and well-behaved past.
You have to hand it to the guy: even if he’s drunk and sightless, he knows how to handle a vehicle.
Tough Times
Anthony Hall lives in central England in Huddersfield, some 20 miles northeast of Manchester. Two years ago, he sadly lost his eyesight due to undisclosed reasons. He is almost completely blind, only being able to faintly see bright lights.
Possibly due to his disability, he has recently been struggling with a slew of personal problems. Hall later told the police that his relationship, finances, and home have all been in less than stellar condition for a long time.
On June 29, 2026, Hall was at his home drinking with his partner. After the two had consumed four bottles of wine, the now-drunk Hall came to a conclusion – he couldn’t take it anymore.
He decided to escape. But where could he go?
How about Scotland? At the time, that seemed like an ideal solution to his addled brain, so he grabbed his partner’s car keys, walked out the door, and got in the vehicle.
Hall has never owned a driver’s license, but he told the police that he had worked around cars his entire life before losing his vision. He figured that’d be good enough, and so he drove off.
Follow the Light
Once on the road, Hall faced the obvious problem – he couldn’t really see where he was going. He could more or less stay on the road by squinting at streetlights’ faint halos, but he couldn’t see lane markings, speed limit signs, or directions.
Luckily for him, there was plenty of truck traffic on the road. Hall positioned himself behind a semi and followed its taillights.
Eventually, Hall determined that he was running out of gas. He pulled up to a gas station and asked an attendant to help him fill up the tank.
They did as he bade them, somehow not registering that Hall was both blind and drunk as a skunk. After getting topped up, he took back to the road, following another large truck.
Overall, he managed to drive 150 miles over the night. Yet the most miraculous thing is that he didn’t crash.
Now, Hall’s driving was far from steady. He reportedly swerved from lane to lane and hit roadside barriers and guardrails on multiple occasions.
Still, he didn’t run into any other vehicle.
‘Individual in Crisis’
His escape only ended when the police pulled him over. They must’ve been in for the surprise of their lives when they realized the car’s driver wasn’t merely drunk but also blind.
But oh boy, was he drunk, though. Just the stench of booze on his breath was enough to tell the cops that this man was way over the limit.
Still, they gave Hall the breathalyzer. It showed a breath alcohol level of 0.115% – well above the U.K. legal limit of 0.08%.
With that, Hall was arrested. On September 8, 2026, he received his sentence after pleading guilty to driving under the influence, operating a vehicle without a license or insurance, and operating a vehicle without the owner’s consent.
Before sentencing, however, the courts agreed that Hall had been an “individual in crisis.” The judge also took into account that his rap sheet was spotless before his mental breakdown.
The court sentenced Hall to three months in jail, suspended for 18 months. He must also check into rehabilitation and abstain from alcohol for 90 days.
Hall was also disqualified from driving for 12 months. Which is a bit odd, considering he was never qualified to drive in the first place.
