  • One of these could be a new tradition for your family from this year on!

Quirky Thanksgiving traditions are fun to read about and could be even more fun to implement into your holiday. (Unless your family already has its own quirky Thanksgiving traditions!?)

We have cinnamon rolls for breakfast. I didn’t realize it was a tradition until my kids pointed out I’d done it for about 4 years in a row and now they expect/look forward to it.

We have good discussions about politics. (This is a joke, don’t do it.)

Taking exams, apparently. There’s no oversight in academia.

My family always plays this stupid game called “poot poot jing”, don’t ask me what it means because I have no idea. It’s basically a word game for kids and is kind of embarrassing. It’s something my siblings and cousins dread because every year because we know the adults will play it.

Thanksgiving pizza. We have all the standard Thanksgiving foods, plus a pizza.

We do “Snoopy Thanksgiving” the night before. For a late snack we serve everything they had in the show (jelly beans, pretzels, popcorn and toast) while we watch the show.

I started a tradition of baking a pumpkin pie the Sunday before Thanksgiving and eating it for dessert all week leading up to the holiday. It’s great.

Raviolis with the other traditional Thanksgiving dishes.

I always extricate the cranberry sauce out of the can so it’s still in perfect can shape and serve it in my fanciest crystal serving bowl. Do you think this will be one of your new, quirky Thanksgiving traditions?

Kids dinner the night after thanksgiving. A theme is chosen every year and the kids all choose a corresponding dish and make it. Past themes: Italian, Cajun/creole, finger foods, dips only, etc. The morning of everyone packs up to go to the grocery store to get their supplies. The adults judge and pick a winner- they usually get a small prize or gift card. Always the most looked forward to. And started because the matriarch was tired after cooking for everyone and wanted the kids to return the favor ? I bet some parents could really get into this as a new quirky Thanksgiving tradition!

Cinnamon rolls or monkey bread for breakfast, Macy’s parade, then we have the feast, and then someone usually watches a football game while others are asleep on the couches and floor in the living room ? growing up my cousins and I did fun random activities. One year my older cousin dared us to jump in their pool even though it was freezing and we did it anyway. Another year we threw a pumpkin in to see if it would float.

My grandma used to get the Turkey shaped butter every year and now it’s a must have on our table! Lol.

After everyone eats and has dessert, we draw names for our Secret Santa event. If we decide to use the fake Christmas tree that year, it will get set up and decorated throughout the day by the kids and adults who aren’t cooking.

My partner and I drink boozy coffee as we watch the parade. We also have cinnamon rolls for breakfast. Do you like this as one of the quirky Thanksgiving traditions!

We spank the turkey. In 2008, my husband did it for the first time. I believe he was just trying to distribute the marinade he injected. We live in FLA, so it was sunny. Our moods were festive. Music was blasting. We laughed when he did it, so he had all of us, me and our 4 sons, each give the turkey a whack! We did it every year after that. My husband died in 2011. We still do this every year in remembrance of him.

We slice the canned cranberry sauce into discs and then use turkey-shaped cookie cutters to cut out cranberry turkeys. It’s a tradition I did as a kid and now my kids do it with my mom while the turkey cooks.

Pizza started when we moved far away from family, so I asked my kids what sides they wanted, and one said pizza. I was like, “Well, I didn’t put any parameters on their requests, so I guess we’re doing it.” I was originally going to try out a new side every year, but instead, we stuck with pizza.

We do thanksgiving pizza with the leftovers the next day. Cranberry for the sauce, topped with turkey, stuffing, and of course mozzarella to make it a pizza!
