People’s Unfiltered Opinions About Thanksgiving: Part One

  • Everyone has an opinion and no one had to say, "tell us how you truly feel."

Do you have an unfiltered opinions about Thanksgiving? The people with these opinions did not hold back.

People celebrate it because people enjoy having holidays where they can have the day off, see family, and have good food. If you don’t enjoy any of those things then duh, you won’t enjoy the holiday. It’s fine to not like those things but your personal dislike of eating and seeing your grandparents doesn’t make the holiday “genuinely disgusting.”

I guess you could go to work instead? Just seems better to have a day off.

Because its a celebration of family and all the good things in your life?

Offer to bring a couple dishes because your family members are apparently serving up poorly made turkey. The meat is supposed to be similar to chicken in consistency, if not more moist. Maybe recommend they try a festive ham, those are pretty hard to dry out. Do you agree with this as one of the unfiltered opinions about Thanksgiving?

Also, if it’s a 13 hour drive, maybe a plane or train ride instead? If you feel so obligated to suffer, might as well mitigate it.

It’s a US holiday, Canada has one on a different day, but it’s not really an “America” holiday like 4th of July or something.

Most people get 2 days off work and you just eat food with friends/family and reflect on things you’re thankful for.

It’s not religious either so anyone can enjoy it, it really is a fantastic holiday.

Same. I’m seeing Reddit being dominated by thanksgiving posts but I’m not mad tbh. It’s interesting to me since it’s not a thing where I am at all. I like reading anecdotes about the days happenings and looking at the food pictures people post.

The concept is supposed to be getting together with family and friends and reflecting on what’s good in your life, reconnecting, etc. Doesn’t work for everyone, but that’s the idea. The feast is something people like, but it’s not necessarily the whole point. And it’s awesome that it’s on Thursday because then you get Friday off for free.

I hate Halloween but love Thanksgiving. We all have our preferences. Do you share this as one of the unfiltered opinions about Thanksgiving.

As someone who just pulled off a fantastic Thanksgiving, I have to disagree. If you have the right people in the kitchen, the holiday is amazing. Kids in the living room playing games, people smoking pot in the back yard or drinking beer, and a few positive and persistent people toiling away for days to deliver a meal everyone can appreciate fully. If you have a judgmental, or toxic dynamic in your family, Thanksgiving will reveal it. But if you and yours love each other, and put that first, it’s a celebration of that love, and it is beautiful.

This is the second post where I’ve seen someone say it’s celebrating a lie…who is out there celebrating the pilgrims and talking about the “history”? Is that really a thing? My family uses it as a time to give thanks. We go around the table and say what it is we are thankful for, reflect on the last year and have a good time. We often have non-Americans join us and they’ve always said they really like that aspect of the holiday. Also, if your turkey is dry, you’re cooking it wrong.

Thanksgiving is about, well, giving thanks. Gathering around a table with food you like and people you give a shit about and remembering that you have all of those things, and that they are good. If you don’t like the food and don’t like the people then yea, you probably aren’t gonna feel very thankful. Is this an unfiltered opinion about Thanksgiving that you share?

I would enjoy thanksgiving more if I didn’t have to eat my grandmas shitty Albanian food every year. I’d like to eat American thanksgiving food.
