Everybody thinks about sex. Others think about it more than others. Much, much more than others.
But who thinks about it the most? Well, now we know.
Recently, Lion’s Den conducted a study to rank the U.S. states based on their obsession with sex. This study, however, didn’t examine porn consumption, but focused on people actually looking to get busy with a real person.
For each state, the research team looked at online search volumes over several key categories, such as “best dating apps,” “best sex tips,” “how to last longer in bed,” and “adult toys.” Additionally, they evaluated the number of sexual health clinics and sex therapists, how often people in the state have sex per week on average, and the percentage of single-person households.
That’s a whole bunch of data. So, which state came out on top?
Here are the 10 most sex-obsessed states in the U.S.
10. Montana
At the 10th place, we have Montana. The residents of the Big Sky Country did a total of 59,920 searches over the evaluations period. Adjusted for population, that’s 5,243 searches per 100,000 people.
The most searched term in Montana was “best sex positions” with 23,300 hits. That’s not very much on a national scale, but what pushes Montana higher up on the list is the comparatively high number of sex therapists.
Good job on providing expert sex advise to those who need it, Montana.
9. South Dakota
South Dakotans did a total of 49,860 sex-related searches. That comes to 5,368 searched per 100K residents.
Frankly, South Dakota’s statistics are pretty boring, as there’s no stand-out weird quirk in the state. The numbers are all run-of-the-mill, and South Dakota is as high on the list as it is simply because the state has such a low population.
Then again, that illustrates that South Dakotans sure think a lot about sex.
8. Colorado
Need a professional’s opinion on something sex-related? Head on over to Colorado because they have sex therapists in droves.
Colorado has 65 sexual health clinics and a whopping 154 sex therapists. That gives the Centennial State 2.6 sex therapists per 100K people — the highest ratio in the Top 10. Coloradans also look for sex therapists online very frequently.
Additionally, Colorado scored very high on searches for “adult toys,” “how to last longer in bed,” “best dating apps,” and “best sex positions.” You’d think they’re a real kinky bunch, but Colorado residents actually have the least sex at only 0.42 times per week.
Maybe that explains the search volumes.
7. Vermont
Vermont comes in at number 7. What stands out here in the statistics is the number of times people bang per week.
On average, Vermonters have sex 1.702 times a week, which the most in Top 10. Curiously, if you look at online search volumes, nothing really jumps out at you.
Guess the people in Vermont are just too busy banging to Google embarrassing questions.
6. Utah
What do people do in Utah? Well, they ask Google what the best sex positions are. The state doesn’t quite beat Colorado, but still registered 96,200 queries for “best sex positions.”
The people put that knowledge into practice, too. Utah ranks third in the Top 10 for the frequency of sex per week, with Utahns getting it on 1.284 times a week on average.
They’re just a kinky bunch like that.
5. North Dakota
Do you like vanilla? Then North Dakota might be the state for you.
Sure, the North Dakotans Google sex-related stuff enough to rank fifth on this list. But they also have sex a bit above-average 1.089 times a week, have a decent number of sexual health clinics.
Don’t knock vanilla — there’s a reason every ice cream maker offers it.
4. North Carolina
Something’s a bit off in North Carolina. Although the state has a relatively low percentage of single-person households, North Carolina ranks second in searches for “best dating apps” and “tinder alternatives.”
The Tarheel State also comes second in searched for “sex therapy near me.” And would you look at that, the couples in the state have sex just 0.737 times a week.
North Carolina, is… Is everything okay at home?
3. Wyoming
Wyoming has the lowest population in the Top 10, with only 586,485 residents. They’re in the third place, so those people do Google about sex a lot — but nothing in the stats really stands out.
Nothing, except the fact that Wyoming has the second most sex on this list. The state’s residents get down and dirty 1.337 times a week.
Additionally, the percentage of single-person households in Wyoming is a nationally rather low 47%. Wyomingites are obsessed with sex, mostly because they’re having it with each other so much.
2. Nevada
Nevada is a curious case. People are having sex 1.019 times a week, which is pretty high for the county — but the percentage of single households is 53%.
Looking at search volumes, Nevada also has an elevated number of searches for “sex therapy near me.” It’s probably a good thing, then, that the state does have a decent number of sex therapists at 0.93 per 100K residents.
It kind of sounds like Nevadans might need them.
1. Illinois
What is going on in Illinois? Well, we can tell there’s not much bedroom activity going on, since Illinois residents only have sex 0.748 times a week.
Yet, the state is responsible for 15,307 sex-related online searches per 100K people — more than twice that of Nevada in the second place. And the most searched term? “Sex therapy near me” at a ridiculous 1,400,000 searches.
It’s no wonder there are 1.35 sex therapists for ever 100K residents in Illinois. They’re making a killing with whatever’s wrong in the Land of Lincoln.
Least Sex-Obsessed State: Indiana
Okay, but what’s the least sex-obsessed state in America? That’s Indiana.
Well, that’s not entirely true. Indiana residents do perform the horizontal mambo a respectable 1.531 times a week.
Maybe that’s why they don’t search for it much online. They just know what they’re doing in bed.
