Are You Thankful Or Thank-less For These Old School Thanksgiving Recipes?

  • Thanksgiving is less than a week away, so let's talk about it!

Are you thankful for any of these old school recipes or are you going to be very choosey about what you put on your plate?

Gelatin Lime Salad

When it comes to Jell-O salad, you need boiling water, a packet of Jell-O mix, crushed pineapple, softened cream cheese, heavy cream and chopped pecans. After mixing it all together, throw it into the icebox to set for about four hours.

Sausage Chive Pinwheels

Use premade dough for these to make it easy on yourself. Lay the dough out on a floured surface. From there, add ground, cooked sausage, your choice of cheese and chopped up chives. Roll it all up and cut the roll into equal-sized rolls. Place these in the oven until they’re golden brown and the dough is cooked. Not only are these pretty on the plate but they taste pretty delicious, too.

Molded Cranberry-Orange Salad

The more Jell-O, the better. Or what’s the saying, you can always squeeze in Jell-O? For this molded Jell-O dish, use cranberry Jell-O and mandarin oranges and use a cool, molded pan. Set it in the fridge until you’re ready to eat and enjoy! This flavor combination is the best during the Fall and this Jell-O salad will be perfect as a light side on Thanksgiving.

Dinner Rolls

There is nothing better than a homemade roll at Thanksgiving dinner. Do you have a traditional recipe you use or maybe one that’s passed down in your family? There are some families that eat their entire turkey dinner on a dinner roll. They start with the roll and cut it in half, placing turkey, stuffing, gravy, and cranberries on one half and covering the sandwich with the other. Have you ever eaten your turkey dinner from a dinner roll instead of a dinner plate?

Strawberry Pretzel Salad

Jell-O was a staple at past holidays, if you haven’t noticed yet. Into a shallow pie dish, prepare strawberry Jell-O into the bottom layer in the dish. Refrigerate until firm. From there, add broken up pretzels and a layer of softened cream cheese on top of that. Let it all set in the refrigerator and when you serve it, flip it upside down, so that the strawberry Jell-O layer is on top.

Holiday Creamed Spinach

This simple side dish is delicious and old-school but also pretty popular to this day. The main ingredients in this dish are spinach, garlic, salt and pepper and heavy whipping cream. For an italian spin, add an Italian spice mix and parmesan cheese. For a cheesy spin that leaves the spinach as the star, add a soft and melty cheese like Mozzarella or Provolone.

Rice Pudding

For rice pudding, you mainly need rice, cinnamon, evaporated milk, sweetened condensed milk, and raisins. You could use almost anything but this is mainly traditional and the classic way to eat it. This delicious treat is great at the dessert table and if you have leftovers the next day, it’d be great as breakfast with your morning cup of coffee.

Sweet Candied Carrots

These carrots are so delicious and so easy. Chop up carrots to uniform size or use baby carrots or carrot chips. Add them to a pan with equal parts butter and brown sugar, about 2 tablespoons each and cook on low until the sugar and butter mixture warm up and the carrots become soft.
