- How many watermelon varieties do you know of? Because there are more
than 1,200 types of watermelon in the world. The Watermelon Board says the most popular kinds include seeded, seedless, and mini watermelons, most with the pinky-red interior. Some watermelons are yellow or orange in color. - Sea turtle nests in Florida have been booming over the past 40 years largely because of the Endangered Species Act of 1973. As of 1979, there were 62 known North Atlantic green sea turtle nests in Florida. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said that by 2019, there were over 41,000 of the nests in the state. What a comeback! Did you know this as one of the sunny summer fun facts?
- There have been a lot of whales spotted near New York City. This shows that the water is clean, a result of different environmental policies including the Clean Water Act, the Endangered Species Act and the Marine Mammal Protection Act. It’s been mainly humpbacks that are seen off of New York City, the numbers raising from about five sightings in 2010 to 600 in 2022!
- The Florida Keys have an underwater music festival located in the Looe Key Reef in Florida. The festival has been going on for about three decades, with a pre-selected radio playlist streamed live out of underwater speakers to snorkelers and divers.
- The most babies are born in the summer. July and September are tied as the most popular birthday month with 11.5% of the year’s birthdays. August and June are rated at second and third, with 11.4% and 11.2% for the respective months.
- There are 643 pools at a resort called the Lexis Hibiscus Port Dickson, a pool
meaning it’s more than 4.69 feet by 6.5 feet. The resort is in Malaysia and the number of pools is so high because each villa has its own private pool! - Did you know that the Eiffel Tower is six inches taller each summer? The 1,062-foot monument heats up and grows to more than six inches taller thanks to thermal expansion that legitimately causes the structure to grow. - Over the course of just over three days, the longest barbeque on record ran for 80 hours. Jan Greef from Columbus Georgia made 1,000 hotdogs, 558 burgers, 526 South African sausages known as boerewors, 104 pieces of chicken and 200 pieces of corn on April 27, 2014.
- The largest bonfire on record was just under 200 feet tall. The biggest bonfire was lit in Lustenau, Austria on March 16th, 2019. The Guinness World Record lists the fire as over 198 feet tall.
- Science tells us that humans are happier in the summer. A study published in 2011 out of the journal Science followed tweets for about two years from 2.4 million people and found that when the change in daylight was positive meaning that the season was approaching the summer solstice. Significantly less happy tweets were posted when the change in daylight was negative, meaning coming into the winter solstice.
- Mid-August is the peak of the most stunning of meteor showers of the year.
It’s active between July 14th and August 24th and is called the Perseids shower. Up to 100 meteors streak across the sky each hour all flying through the sky at about 37 miles per second.
