Well, grab your partner and head to the bedroom because it’s time for some sex-ercise.


It’s no secret that a good roll in the hay can pass for a workout. But a recent study by toy maker (if you catch our drift) Lelo has revealed the best sex positions for burning calories.

So, if you’d like to get fit by getting hot and bothered, here are the top 10 ways to do it. Pun intended.

Note: Lelo calculated the burned calories based on a male/female couple of average U.S. weight engaging in a 15-minute session, so that’s what we’ll be referencing. These ‘exercises’ surely work no matter what gender or weight you and your partner are — the burned calorie count just might go up or down.

10. Cowgirl

Cowgirl’s a true classic when it comes to positions for doing the hanky-panky. If you’ve somehow never heard of it, it features him (or the penetrating partner) lying down with his legs straight while she straddles his crotch and moves up and down.

The cowgirl isn’t the most strenuous of exercises, at least for the partner on the bottom since they’re lying down. For the top partner (her, based on the data), it’s an okay way to burn some calories.

His Calories Burned: 24

9. Sixtynine

Nice.

Sorry, we had to get the cultural references out of the way. The 69 is a position where one partner lays down and the other straddles them, with the top’s legs on both sides of the bottom one’s head, to engage in mutual oral sex.

You know, the research doesn’t actually explain which way the studied man and woman were arranged. She clearly had to work harder, though, as she burned more calories.

His Calories Burned: 39

Her Calories Burned: 55.5

Total Calories Burned: 94.5

8. Spread Eagle

The previous positions have favored the lady, but this one’s a bigger burner for the gents. In spread eagle (or just the eagle) position, she lays down, lifts her legs up, and spreads them to form a V (perhaps supporting them by grabbing her knees with her hands) while he goes to town.

The guy will end up burning significantly more calories in this position. Put together, though, the combined calorie burn goes past the 100 mark.

7. The Squat

Ladies, if you want to really feel the burn while also feeling something else, this position is for you. The squat is like the cowgirl, but instead of the penetrated partner keeping their knees on the bed, they place their feet on both sides of the penetrating partner’s torso to squat down.

As a result, this is the most strenuous position for her, burning 94 calories over 15 minutes. For him, though, the squat and the cowgirl do equally little.

6. Legs Up

There are a lot of “legs up” sex positions but the Lelo study doesn’t actually explain which it’s referring to. Curiously, this is also the most searched-for position in the U.S. — perhaps because no one knows what it is.

We’ll assume this is where she throws her legs over his shoulders and lifts her hips up to meet his. But if you don’t get the below results, don’t waste your time blaming us, and just try something different.

It’ll be more fun, we promise.

5. Doggy Style

Do we really need to explain doggy style? Well, in case you’ve lived under a puritanical rock, it’s where you both kneel down and he humps her (or whomever) from behind.

It’s definitely a better exercise for the humper. That said, it’s still a better workout than, say, the spread eagle for the humpee as well.

Her Calories Burned: 51.5

4. Lotus

To form the lotus, she or the penetrated partner should sit on his, or the penetrator’s, lap with legs spread while he’s also sitting upright. We’re sure you can figure out what to do from there.

This position is the one that burns the most equal amounts of calories, although it’s a bit more strenuous on him. If you’re looking to share the load, though, the lotus should be your choice.

Sounds like some hard work and, looking at the burned calories, it is. That’s probably why the kneeling wheelbarrow ranks third on the list.

2. Standing

Once again, we’re not sure which of the many standing sex positions Lelo reviewed here. So, we assume this is the default one, which is basically doggy style but standing instead of kneeling.

And what a difference standing up makes in terms of calories. If there’s one takeaway from all of this, it’s that everybody should just do it standing instead of lying down (provided one of you isn’t too short).

1. The Butter Churner

And here it is — the sex position that gives you the best workout. We really wish we could illustrate this article with diagrams because this one’s a bit more difficult to explain.

Basically, she lays down and throws her legs and back up in the air until they’re perpendicular to the bed (or whatever you’re getting dirty on). He should support her while placing his legs on both sides of her torso. Then just squat away and churn that butter.

Really, it’s no surprise this one’s takes the most work in total. Still, if you’re the one getting churned, the squat’s still just barely more effective.
