The Last Of The Odd Laws In Each State

  • Because you need to know about all the states.

Have you caught any of the last few articles about the odd laws in each state? This will be the last of them!

Maine

Maine has a no dancing policy in establishments that sell liquor, unless the establishment has been issued a “special amusement permit.”

Oklahoma

This state doesn’t want any eavesdropping happening. According to the law, “every person guilty of secretly loitering about any building, with intent to overhear discourse therein, and to repeat or publish the same to vex, annoy, or injure others, is guilty of a misdemeanor.”

Idaho

In extreme cases, cannibalism is legal in this state. The law clarifies that it’s a legitimate defense to have committed cannibalism “under extreme life-threatening conditions as the only apparent means of survival.” This has got to be one of the oddest of the odd laws.

North Dakota

You need to get permission if you want to kill pigeons in North Dakota. The law states that “no person, firm or corporation shall exterminate pigeons or other harmful wild birds without first having obtained a permit from the Fargo health department.”

Louisiana

In Louisiana, there’s a law that says individuals involved in “bear wrestling matches”  with the definition of “a match or contest between one or more persons and a bear for the purpose of fighting or engaging in a physical altercation “are guilty of wrestling a bear.

Nebraska

Nebraska outlaws marriage if you have a venereal disease. Courts did later specify if “the other spouse is aware of the disease at the time of marriage, they can’t try to annul the marriage later on these grounds.” This has got to be the absolute of all the odd laws of the states.

Missouri

In Missouri, specifically in Jefferson, there are rules about garage sales. You cannot have more than two within a particular location over the course of one year. Also, your garage sales can’t last longer than three days and must be kept within a specific set of hours.

Maryland

Maryland doesn’t like swearing. In fact, in Rockville, it’s illegal to “profanely curse and swear or use obscene language upon or near any street, sidewalk or highway within the hearing of persons passing by, upon or along such street, sidewalk or highway.” This is one of the silliest of the odd laws out of all of the states, to be honest.

Kansas

In Kansas, there’s no adding of ice cream to a slice of cherry pie. Up until a time, it was illegal to top a slice of cherry pie with a scoop of ice cream. The Kansas Secretary of State says it’s unclear how this law originated or whether it’s still technically on the books. It’s also not enforced.

Indiana

Indiana was the state that took the long, irrational number of Pi and redefined it as 3.2.

Illinois

It’s illegal in the state of Illinois to dye baby chicks, rabbits or other fowls. You cannot sell or display “living baby chicks, ducklings, goslings, or other fowl or rabbits which have been dyed, colored or otherwise treated so as to impart to them an artificial color.”

Hawaii

Billboards are illegal in Hawaii! Maybe that’s why it’s so pretty.

Florida

After a confusingly worded law was made to ban internet cafes involved with illegal gambling that prompted a lawsuit. It argued that the ban could have been applied to any internet. The argument was that the ban could have been interpreted to apply to any internet-connected device.

Well, that’s a wrap! What is your absolute, number one, favorite of all the odd laws? Let me know in the comments.
