Texas City Disaster — USA, 1947

Seveso Disaster — Italy, 1976
A chemical reactor accident released a toxic cloud containing dioxin. Nearby residents were evacuated, contaminated animals were slaughtered, and large areas were restricted. The event led directly to stronger European industrial-safety rules.
PEPCON Explosion — Nevada, USA, 1988
A fire at a chemical plant storing ammonium perchlorate escalated into enormous explosions. Shock waves damaged buildings several miles away. Two workers died, while hundreds of people were injured. Did you know about this as one of the strange industrial accidents?
Halifax Explosion — Canada, 1917
The ammunition ship Mont-Blanc collided with another vessel in Halifax Harbour. Its cargo detonated, killing approximately 2,000 people and injuring thousands. It was among the largest human-made explosions of its time.
Oppau Explosion — Germany, 1921
A silo containing fertilizer exploded at a BASF plant. Workers had been using explosives to loosen compacted fertilizer material. The blast killed approximately 500–600 people and devastated the surrounding area.
Cleveland East Ohio Gas Explosion — USA, 1944
A liquefied-natural-gas storage accident produced fires and explosions that spread into surrounding neighborhoods. More than 130 people died. Did you know about this as one of the strange industrial accidents?
Feyzin Disaster — France, 1966
A propane storage accident at a refinery caused an enormous fire and subsequent explosions. Workers and emergency personnel were killed, and nearby equipment became involved in the chain reaction.
Aberfan Disaster — Wales, 1966
A huge spoil tip above the village of Aberfan collapsed after heavy rain. Approximately 144 people died, including 116 children. It was an industrial catastrophe involving mine waste rather than the mine itself.
