Bizarre Things That Have Been Discovered In The Ocean

  • What do you think is on this list of wild things that have been found in the ocean?

From underwater forests to gases, do you think you know what else will be on this list of things discovered in the ocean? Or maybe you have something to add to the list?

The Antikythera Shipwreck — Greece

Discovered by sponge divers in 1900–1901, the wreck contained statues, coins, glassware and the famous Antikythera Mechanism. The ship sank around the 1st century BCE and carried luxury goods from the eastern Mediterranean.

Deep-Sea Giant Squid

For centuries, giant squid were known mostly from washed-up bodies and sailor stories. In 2004, Japanese researchers obtained the first photographs of a live giant squid in its natural environment. The animal can reach enormous lengths and possesses extremely large eyes. Did you know about this being discovered in the ocean?

The Bloop

In 1997, underwater microphones operated by NOAA detected an extraordinarily powerful low-frequency sound in the Pacific Ocean. It became known online as the Bloop. Later analysis concluded that it was most likely produced by ice-related activity rather than a giant unknown creature.

Underwater Methane Lakes

Some deep-sea environments contain methane-rich fluids emerging from the seafloor. Specialized organisms live around these seeps, obtaining energy through chemical processes rather than sunlight.

Hydrothermal Vents

Deep beneath the ocean surface, volcanic vents release extremely hot, mineral-rich water. Entire ecosystems exist around them without sunlight. Microorganisms use chemical energy to support food webs containing worms, crabs and other specialized animals. Did you know about this being discovered in the ocean?

The Baltic Sea Anomaly

A sonar image recorded in 2011 appeared to show an unusual circular structure on the Baltic seabed. The image generated enormous speculation about extraterrestrial objects. Researchers have suggested geological explanations, and the original sonar imagery was never sufficient evidence for an alien craft.

Underwater Forests

Ancient forests have been discovered preserved beneath seabeds and lakes. Changes in sea level and coastal geology can submerge landscapes that once stood above water. Some submerged forests contain preserved tree trunks thousands of years old.

The Mariana Trench

The deepest known part of Earth’s oceans reaches almost 11 kilometers below sea level. Despite crushing pressure, darkness and near-freezing temperatures, researchers have found living organisms there. The environment demonstrates how adaptable life can be under conditions once considered impossible. Did you know about this being discovered in the ocean?

The Yonaguni Monument — Japan

Divers near Yonaguni Island discovered enormous underwater rock formations with terraces and apparently straight edges. Some researchers believe they are natural geological formations; others have argued that humans modified them. Their origin remains debated.

Deep-Sea Creatures With Transparent Bodies

Numerous deep-ocean animals have transparent or partially transparent bodies. The strategy can make them extremely difficult to detect in an environment where sunlight is almost completely absent.
