Do you remember some of the crazy things that happened in the 90s? Like what about the fight, with the bite?
Who doesn’t remember the infamous fight between Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield, or for the younger generation, or hasn’t heard about it? Tyson lost it during the fight and bit off part of
Holyfield’s ear. The event had a worldwide audience, at the time the biggest pay-per-view fight ever. After biting the ear, Tyson spit a one-inch piece of cartilage onto the mat. Though there is no excusing the behavior, Tyson was illegally headbutted by Holyfield. Unfortunately for Tyson, the refs disagreed with him. But do you remember the rest of what happened? The fight didn’t even end after the initial bite and this, Tyson bit the other ear! In the end, Holyfield won by disqualification and Tyson lost his boxing license and was fined $3 million dollars for the incident. The two fighters reunited on Oprah years later in 2009 when Tyson kind of apologized. Do you remember when this happened in the 90s?
A group of collectors digging for fossils in South Dakota found Edmontosaurus bones in August 1990. The team went to leave when they noticed they had a flat tire, and while waiting,
Sue Hendrickson of the group went to look at the nearby cliffs. They hadn’t explored the area yet but when she did, she found the largest and best preserved specimen of a Tyrannosaurus Rex ever found. The specimen was named “Sue” after the lady that found it, measuring more than 40 feet long and 13 feet tall and they found over 90% of the entire body! Sue was put up for auction on October 4th, 1997 and went for a staggering $8.4 million and can still be seen on display at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago. Did you know this happened in the 90s?
Crazy to think but in 1994 a clerk working for the Texas legislature named Gregory Watson discovered that Mississippi had never ratified the 13th amendment to abolish slavery. Back in 1965, Mississippi was among four states that originally rejected the amendment. However, the other three states of New Jersey, Delaware, and Kentucky, eventually ratified it. The kicker though is that Mississippi never did. So 130 years after the amendment became law after the state ratified the law as well. Even though it was ratified, the state never went through the correct paperwork and documentation to the federal government. It wasn’t completely legitimized until 2012, a shocking 148 years later. Did you know this finally happened in the 90s, the start of it anyhow?
Do you remember at the beginning of the 90s when there was
still smoking on airplanes? All the way up until February 25th, 1990, smoking was still banned in the air, and that was only domestically at the time. This eventually inspired airlines worldwide to install the “no smoking” signs in their planes. It’s kind of wild it took this long and happened in the 90s.
