Everyone is getting older but not all of us are turning 50 this year. What item on this list surprises you at being 50 in 2024?
Bailey’s Irish Cream
This liquor is known for being the first like it, a yummy combination of the richness of cream and a shot of whiskey. It’s made into drinks like Irishman and coffee-based cocktails. Cream-based alcohols are pretty popular now but back in 1974, it was Bailey’s or nothing.
Dayquil
Originally called DayCare, this medicine has been helping symptoms of cold sufferers since 1974. It includes non-drowsy ingredients to help with cold or flu during the day. Did you know that Dayquil turned 50 this year?
Post-It’s
Back in 1968, Spencer Silver, scientist, developed an adhesive that was both sticky enough for another surface yet too weak to hold two pieces of paper together without separating them. For a while , no one knew what to do with it. A man named Art Fry came along in 1974 and changed all that. While singing in church one Sunday, Fry wanted to use a stick on bookmark in his hymnal, something that wouldn’t damage the page when it was removed. Silver and Fry worked together and eventually, the Post-It we know and love was born.
Connect Four
Milton Bradley, the board game company, developed Connect Four and debuted in 1974. The game is of course inspired by the classic Tic-Tac-Toe in which players have to get four chips in a row to get the win. What a fun game to have turned 50 this year?
Skittles
Skittles didn’t come into the United States scene until 1979, after first being invented in the United Kingdom in 1974. As familiar as the taste the rainbow slogan is, the story of how Skittles came to be remains elusive. Instead of the origins of the candy, the Skittles website has some crazy story about how the rainbow candies came from space.

People magazine turns 50 this year. The magazine has over 2,600 issues out thus far and is one of the most iconic pop news sources of the United States. Almost anyone that’s :someone” has shown up on the cover over the years.
Rubik’s Cube
This toy was created in 1974 by Hungarian Ern? Rubik and is now called the Rubik’s Cube but was first named the “Magic Cube.” It was marketed as a toy and tool to help children learn about three-dimensional objects but that wasn’t was it was made for. Rubik himself was obsessed with geometry and invented it to challenge himself. This created a frenzy for fans for a while called “cubers.” This classic turned 50 this year, if you can believe it!
Bold Laundry Detergent
This laundry detergent was originally released in 1974 in the UK Market. It was their first low-suds biological laundry detergent. Bold by Proctor & Gamble has been popular ever since it was released.
The Heimlich Maneuver
Before the Heimlich Maneuver, Henry Heimlich wrote a detailed article in 1974 titled, “Pop Goes the Café Coronary,” referring to the automatic response to choking being repeated strikes to the back. The Heimlich Maneuver stated based on doctor’s observations in doges and has proved to have a high success rate in preventing fatal choking situations.
