- Do you know about the bizarre disease that causes you to have a foreign accent?
There are such bizarre diseases such as being allergic to water. Did you know that? Here’s more:
Alice in Wonderland Syndrome (AIWS)
Alice in Wonderland Syndrome (AIWS) is also known as Todd’s Syndrome. AIWS is a neurological condition that presents as a migraine but distorts a person’s body image, like the size of their head, hands and feet. Time can distort as well, such as feeling like time is going really slow or super fast and some people even experience hallucinations. There is no proven treatment for AIWS yet but there are treatment plans out there like migraine prophylaxis and consuming the “migraine diet.”
Foreign Accent Syndrome
This condition actually causes a foreign accent in people who otherwise didn’t have one before. The disorder is caused by damage to the area of the brain that has to do with speech. “Stroke is the most common cause, but trauma, tumors, and other neurological conditions such as multiple sclerosis may also cause patients to begin speaking with a different accent,” according to Christine Montross; MD, assistant professor of psychiatry and human behaviors at Brown University. Chief of the medical neurology branch at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke shares that the accent isn’t usually very good and that native speakers will know it’s not authentic. And while speech therapy may help, the symptoms can last years or even be permanent. Do you think this is one of the most bizarre diseases?
The Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome
This extremely rare condition presents as a person going through rap aging, beginning in childhood. This occurs in 1 in 4 million, having more than 131 cases reported within scientific literature across the globe since 1886. This bizarre diseases symptoms include wrinkled and aged-looking skin, Alopecia (hair loss,) fragile, brittle bones, kidney failure, loss of eyesight and fat under the skin and joint abnormalities. There is no known cure for this condition but a new drug has been approved that “can help reduce the risk of death due to the disease.”
Trimethylaminuria, Fish Odor Syndrome (TMAU)
This rare condition makes your sweat, breath, saliva and pee smell like rotten fish. Can you even imagine? TMAU cannot be cured but it’s said that changing your diet, using certain soaps and lotions and keeping your stress low can help reduce the symptoms. This has got to be one of the absolute worst of the bizarre diseases.
Water Allergy
About 60% of the human body is made of water but the truth about it is, some people are allergic to water. This condition is called aquagenic urticaria. Any skin but particularly the neck, arms and upper trunk of the body are susceptible to itchy hives after coming into contact with water. People with aquagenic urticaria cannot take a shower, go swimming or stand outside and enjoy the rain. For those that are more sensitive, crying may trigger a breakout and sometimes even drinking water can give them an allergic reaction. This would be the worst of all the bizarre diseases!
