Why are Laws Needed?
Most will be aware that laws are typically created to ensure the ordered running of society, which can apply to any number of things. They can be created to make certain unsavory activities illegal, which is important when considering a structured society.
They are also useful in business to ensure that corporations act fairly and responsibly as they have certain duties that most individuals will not need to adhere to. There is no doubt that laws are necessary, but this is not true for all. It might surprise some to learn that there are some incredible laws in place in some regions that don’t make sense at all.
Blue Laws
Delaware is one state that is a haven for this. A popular fact about the state is that for a time running from the creation of the state to the 1940s, doing anything in public on a Sunday was virtually impossible. This may stem from the Christian belief that Sunday is the day of rest, and America was founded with this belief in mind. However, with the so-called ‘Blue Laws’ in place in Delaware, this particular state may have taken the idea of resting on Sunday too far. This is because people could be ticketed and even locked up if they were seen doing things like working or doing business dealings, though the ‘offences’ are not limited to just these two. Fortunately, this is no longer the case, but there are still more curious laws in Delaware that are still in place even today.
Odd Delawarean Laws
Those who like a drink now and then might be aware of this one, but until recently, it was impossible to buy alcohol from liquor stores outside the hours of noon to 8 PM on a Sunday. It seems like the idea of resting on a Sunday stems to other parts of Delawarean society, and it is no wonder that the state also axed this law.
Those in need of cash might be familiar with pawnbrokers, which are establishments that allow people to get cash for their items straightaway but also offers them the opportunity to buy it back. However, one law that is still in place is that pawnbrokers cannot accept a wheelchair or a fake limb if one desires to pawn one of these. So, for those who have a wheelchair leftover from an injured leg, there is no use taking it to a pawnbroker!
How Delaware became the first state to legalize online gambling
Delaware doesn’t lag in all aspects of the law though. When it comes to online gambling, Delaware was the first US state to legalize the activity and residents will now find it possible to play at many Delaware online casinos from home. This change came as a response to the failing physical casinos that were already present in the state. They passed the law soon later, but oddly enough, they weren’t the first state to have an online gambling site.
It is clear that Delaware has some bizarre laws and a fascination with Sundays, but the reality is that most regions will have some odd laws that most people don’t know about.
