8. New York Woman Killed By Great White Shark in Harpswell Maine
In July 2020, in the sleepy town of Harpswell, ME, a New York City woman was brutally attacked by a great white shark while swimming in Mackerel Cove. She was spotted by kayakers who brought her body to shore but not before she died.
It is believed the shark mistook her for a seal, which are popular in Maine. This was the first fatal shark attack ever in Maine and only the second shark attack in 10 years.
The attack rocked the area, causing beaches to limit swimming and kayakers to question their choices.
