Awake During Heart Surgery
(Reader Contribution to 7 Amazing Anesthesia Awareness stories)When I was 7 mos pregnant with my 3rd child I suffered from cardiac tamponade (in which the pericardium surrounding the heart fills with fluid, in essence strangling the heart). I needed emergency surgery to cut a "window" into the pericardium. While the surgwons were cutting I woke up ( having been lightly sedated for the safety of my baby) and heard what they were saying and felt tubes being pushed into my side to drain fluid. I was paralysed, but heard the neonatologist say that I was starting labor and they had to stop it so my daughter would not be born prematurely. It was a terrifying experience, and I only found courage through concern for the health of my child.
