Faked cancer

(Reader Contribution to 10 People Who Faked Cancer For Cash)

Holland Township woman convicted of pocketing thousands of dollars in charity while faking cancer was sentenced Monday afternoon at the 20th Circuit Court in Grand Haven.

Judge Edward Post sentenced Elizabeth Ann Smith to 90 days in county jail and 50 hours of community service. He also ordered her to pay $3,655 in restitution and $695 in attorney fees.

"I've never been in trouble before," Smith told the judge before sentencing. "I've always been the person everyone looked up to."

Smith came under investigation in July after her Holland employer, a Speedway gas station, called police with concerns about medical claims to the company's corporate office. Police have said several parties claimed to have donated money for her supposed medical bills, including Holland co-workers. Smith collected between $8,000 and $10,000 from a charity event held at a Veterans of Foreign Wars building in Egelston Township outside of Muskegon.
