Argentavis magnificens
(Reader Contribution to 10 Most Amazing Extinct Animals)
The most interesting one for me. This bird had a 21ft (6.4m) wingspan. It was of the long-dead Teratornithidae family which literally translates from Greek: "monstrous birds". It's closest survivor is the Andean condor. Argentavis remains the largest flying bird ever discovered and is thought to have preyed on cattle-sized animals.
