An Asterisk For Alcatraz's Escape Record
(Reader Contribution to
10 of the World's Most Unusual Prisons)
While the prison says there were no successful escapes from Alcatraz, Frank Morris and the Anglin brothers may have done just that in 1962. "Mythbusters" recreated the escape attempt during season 3. Accurate materials were used in constructing a raincoat raft that the show hosts set sail in from Alcatraz at night. The Mythbuster boys made it to dry land without much incident, proving at least the possibility exists for someone to escape the island. There is no proof the escapees lived and no proof they died, so the prison was able (by claiming the men must have drowned) to keep it's perfect record intact.
