Hemicorporectomy
(Reader Contribution to 10 Unbelievable Medical Procedures)
I heard about this radical procedure at a lecture given to the research staff of a drug company. The surgeon discussing it indicated the procedure is so radical patients choose death over it. When the discussant noted this procedure was most often done for patiens with bladder cancer associated with smoking or working in the chemical industry. Realizing I was in both categories, I stopped smoking and have stayed tobacco-free since 1974.
