Allthough the Nazi-forces in occupied Holland capitulated ? as in the rest of Europe ? may 5th 1945, not all German soldiers thought that was a good idea. For weeks groups of German soldiers remained defiant on the Dutch Wadden isles, not mereley waiting for allied forces to arrive, but actually expanding their defenceworks (through forced labour, obviously). On Terschelling and Ameland the grunts in the German ranks became fed up after three weeks ousted their officers and surrendered to local resistance. But not on Schiermonnikoog, where the original of 480 man strong garrisson was complemented by a group of 120 SS-officers. Because the island was an integral part of the German Wasserman early warning radarsystem, it was allready heavily fortified.
An allied invasion of the tiny island was planned by Canadian militairy, but massive casualtyfigures among civilians were feared. In the end, on june 11th, a mock-invasion was staged with the help of Dutch resistance. On june 12th the german commander formally surrendered.
