The Sandbox Tree and its Exploding Fruit
(Reader Contribution to 10 of the World's Strangest Plant Species)
Found in the Amazon rain forest, the 100 foot tall Sandbox Tree is, quite simply, a tree from hell. It has spikes the whole length of its trunk to prevent anything from climbing it. To make it worse the sap secreted from the tree is used by local natives to make poison to tip their arrows. Here's the worst part: not only does it have hundreds of spikes along its trunk, and poisonous sap, but the fist sized fruit that grows from the tree literally explodes when it ripens! It has been known to injure passing humans and animals from the force of the exploding fruit. This has earned the Sandbox tree the nickname of "Dynamite Tree" since that is the sound it makes when the fruits explode.
