The Aral Sea

(Reader Contribution to 10 Most Fascinating Deserts)

On the border of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan lies the Aral Sea, or at least what's left of it. In the sixties Russia diverted the two rivers that feed it to irrigate agricultural land. In barely fifty years, the sea lost 90% of its original size. At the moment it's nothing more than a desert, where camels seek for shadow spots under ship wrecks. Truly amazing.
