i also suffer from idiopathic hypersomnia, and I've found some relief

8 Truly Bizarre Sleep Disorders)
I used to sleep like a cat--sleep a few hours at a time, get up to eat or use the bathroom, maybe stay up a little bit, then go back to sleep. Usually I felt I needed to go back to bed just one hour after waking.
My neurologist put me on different stimulants, which helped but were inadequate. Finally he ordered a sleep study (the third one I'd had within a 2 year span) and a nap study; he diagnosed me with idiopathic hypersomnia and prescribed me Nuvigil, similar to Provigil. This was the first medicine that actually helped. It honestly worked. (Unfortunately, I had a reaction to one of two drugs: Nuvigil or an antibiotic and now can take neither.)
Left without any prescription options, I decided to treat this disorder with food. I adopted what was basically a whole-foods protein-rich diet. In the morning I would eat one or two hard boiled eggs and an apple or pear, and had enough energy to live a relatively normal lifestyle for a young adult. I was spending more of my nights asleep and more of my days awake.
I have since abandoned the healthier diet, and am attempting to readopt it. But I've found another source of relief from this energy-draining sleep disorder. My chiropractor also practices TBM, or total body modification. It uses muscle testing and reflex points to effectively "reset" whatever glands or organs that are not functioning to their highest efficiency. I do not understand how it works, I just know that it does. Previously, if I had one bad night's sleep, or cheated on my diet one day, the next several days were messed up. I would be exhausted constantly just like before, and it would take much effort for me to regain control. But since having the doctor do TBM, my body will reset itself within a day or two after I've had a bad day or night.
Living with idiopathic hypersomnia will always be an uphill battle for me, a battle which I will likely have to fight daily for the rest of my life. But it's nice to be able to live like a regular adult. I just want some other people to get relief too.
Experiment with diet and some forms of alternative medicine and see if it helps you cope with your sleep disorder.
